question how can I be sure the cuttings have rooted. Used your method scrumpy of competition rooting. More than one per pot around the edges. I did take another batch of cuttings tonight . The grow light is making a big difference coming through fast . Took 2 nenekazi, 2 more parkland rave, another candy, 2 lovely winholm Diane the best yet, 2 Clearview Debby, A sorbet, 7 park princess, 3 mignon sunshine and the leaves remind me of last year that beautiful deep dark green. Got Weston pirates soon , loads more Diane, zoe , senzoe , candy, Ac Abby , peach delight (weird plant) Mary's is slow but more coming. Hapet pearl has over 20 coming . The Jack gott pot tubers excellent only a week and all have woken up and throwing multiple eyes. Heat mat not even on now.

.
It is pretty obvious when they have rooted. The cuttings show growth, and a little tug on them confirms it as you feel the resistance. I squeeze the pot first before tugging them.

It was such a painless delivery Lou78W :)I will need the luck and large doses of it with all of it. Lots of effort to make up for a lack of talent

I will do that a squeeze and a gentle tug and check . Some past 14days now so will check them. Should I have a growlight over the cuttings ?

Lou78W the tubers had just had there once a week watering this time first feed with miracle grow After I dampened the compost first with a mist of water. I let it dry out in between. Also using Jack's magic which is rather dark in colour to begin with. I am very nervous of over watering after that pellet disaster. Never again ! Pretty much all the cuttings that came in the first batch in the pellets have been binned with damping off. I think some have started to root. Upright good reflex on leaves and when you just tease them some resistance. Leaving them another week to be sure. Each one now precious as I don't have the numbers I need. dahliadave Hapet pearl not rooting as you said. Raymond, when we were growing Hapet Pearl I found the best thing was not to look at it, leave it alone and keep them on the dry side. I would go back to them in 10 days or so and they would be fine. Dahlias are one of the weirdest things for rooting. Growing almost 300 varieties- more when you include all our trial ones, we find that there are some real tricky characters. We have had Winholme Diane cuttings sitting in their trays, looking perfectly ok with no mist system, on an open bench and still showing no root growth after 6 weeks! Then as an experiment I have then taken the smallest growing tip out of these old, tired looking cuttings, dipped in rooting hormone and the so and so's have put a fantastic little rooting system out on 7 days! The next batch taken (we take batches roughly 8-9 days apart because as the season progresses they take less time to root) will often give us 100% take after 14 days thus totally messing up our scheduling! Started sending orders out in earnest this week- 150 less Dahlia orders to send- 3000 still to go!!!! 5th batch of our mini plants was moved into our despatch house yesterday -250+ trays of 20 cuttings! Hopefully see some of you at Crooklands at the weekend. Just hoping it doesn't snow too much tonight up here- just listened to the forecast!

dahliadave thanks for that I will keep them on the dry side. I just give some the occasional mist if flagging a bit. Keeping the temp low Had the ndc email and there tip was to keep a little drier as well. As a tuber throwing up cuttings Hapet pearl is an excellent provider there is excess of 20 shoots coming on it now. Delighted your in full cuttings swing. Hopefully one day I an come and visit And see your dahlia fields. Enjoy crooklands . All the best and hope your mum and everyone is doing well .
