For some reason hillcrest candy the growing tips keep damping off and going black . This variety only . pinched it out this time leaves are fine . Any ideas ? Temp is at 10celsius all others looking ok. Just candy. Should I spray with a fungicide ? I would say it is the tuber throwing up dodgey cuttings. I've had similar problems in the past with Fairway Spur. You can predict when they are going to go black by looking at the tip of the cutting. Usually you can see black spots on the leaves at the tip. Good news is follow up cutting material usually roots normally. Won't hurt to spray with a fungicide.

Nice. I've got 200 that should be ready in the next few days, at least the same number of cuttings to take though I won't take all of them, then apart from the ones that are a little behind, that will do me for this year.

Well hillcrest candy is a pain in the *** every cutting has sooner or later gone in the bin with a black growing tip. Tomorrow they get sprayed with a fungicide as its the big take of these in a couple of days. No other issues with damping off on any other variety after that pellet disaster.
Although peach delight is the most ugly sickly Awful looking plant . Flower better be better ! Lol
I did bin a Tuber of park princess think it is virused. I have two and one the cuttings just did not look right funny colour mottled leaves and stunted very thick and short jointed. Not taking any chances.

Well by now all your tubers should be covered with cuttings from now on for the next 3 maybe 4 weeks this is the time to take you exhibition dahlia cuttings, with the longer days the cutting root quickly in as little time as 6-7 days depending on the varieties but certainly rooted by day 10 or day 12. I have far far too many cuttings in the propagator at the moment (some 800) but will be useful for friends, topping and pot tubers etc
I pot into number 7 pots (7 x 7 x 8) then move them on to number 9 (9 x 9 x 10) then planted out of these the last week in May (May bank holiday) I see no benefit at all of planting out of bigger pots. In fact if I can plant out of number 7 pots so much the better so so much easier and no need for a trowel on my well prepared soil.
Happy propagating.

Just got over a hundred varieties in soil under lights, double tubers of most, hoping to make cuttings from about twenty varieties for insurance or show. Will have another hundred varieties potted after Easter.
Lots of trade and vendor tubers coming in the mail every day, lots of visits to the post office to send out, too. Fun time of year. I resisted starting sooner, thank goodness, as I had way too little room last year when I began everything early March.

I have four rooted winholm Diane and some bedding one's. The others I thought had rooted have not and some rotted off lost all the Clearview Sundance and some peach delight As well as all the hillcrest candy bar one cutting. Some now in the propagator for nearly three weeks and not rooting. I guess not enough light indoors.
At Kent dahlia society yesterday and many others having issues With damping off and rot. Very experienced growers and they don't know why.
Just need to tough it out and keep taking cutting for the next 3 to 4 weeks. Off to take more now.

Got a great tip from ian that there is not enough air circulation and that is causing my issues. I am watching the moisture as well will keep the medium a bit drier now. Will set up a fan in the summer house just to circulate the air Which I hope will help. On a good note Tel wyns favourite is a lovely looking plant and doing well as is garden friends. Picture taken just after potting up into 3inch pot.
