I am so happy tonight 2 lovely rooted Weston pirates and another winholm Diane. The Diane and one of the pirates great roots. The other pirate good but a little smaller. I am so happy to have a modest success after all the issues. I think I have more rooting but waiting a good week yet on those. The last two trays of cuttings I took one in coir and one in sand the coir look excellent. The sand some flagging zero with the coir have misted the ones in sand. Temp in summer house today got up to over 26 degrees the soil temp almost 20 degrees tomorrow and Tuesday lid off propagator supposed to cool a little mid week. the propagator is not switched on. Good to hear a positive after the past week or so, keep up the good work lol

Learning so much on here but just occasionally I get lost in the jargon of the knowledgeable!! . I love it and remind myself that we all start somewhere and what I don't understand today I may be doing myself tomorrow. I'm looking forward to an exciting season and years to come

I agree with you Cat. It is a steep learning curve.

dianthus when I saw all the terminology I was oh er sounds brutal have not got a clue ! But once you get your head round it,it makes sense. Some of Dave gillams YouTube videos are good for it. His DVD for the nds is good and he describes it in detail Especially knockback. I have still to do it in practise so will be fun and daunting and scary ! looking forward to seeing your seedlings. I only have 6 surviving. five very strong one ok ish.

I only have 6 surviving. five very strong one ok ish. I sowed half a packet, supposedly containing about 50 seeds, thirty seedlings have come up, and just counted 30 left in the packet! I sow my seeds in pure peat with perlite to aerate it. So far, most of my seeds have germinated.... apart from celeriac, which take ages, and some old pansy seed.
I used to help my mum dig up her dahlias each year, wrap them in newspaper, store them in the shed, check them in spring, and when they started to sprout, replant them in pots or straight back into the south-facing bed where she liked them to go. She split some of them, and I remember some being more vigorous than others. By far the most vigorous, was a purple and white striped, large-headed variety. There was none of this fancy stuff that you show growers do

scrumpy you did not mention the Vaseline. Go on then Tel..... what is the Vaseline used for?
Imagine slug/ pest deterrent or to seal the cut stalk to seal it when you stop the main stem?

I place a ring of Vaseline on the flower stem between the top pair of leaves and the flower bud, stops the earwigs climbing up and chewing the petals.

I remember dad doing that Tel He didn't do pots and straw on the canes but Vaseline yes, and with good results, a good growers tip:)

This will be my first year growing show varieties the only two I had last year one pooh and the other sir Alf. Sir Alf did not even flower got hit by spider mites. I do love novelty one's especially bi colour and some are showable like Weston Spanish dancer and kenora sunset. I am trying Hapet ideal which is a miniature semi cactus white and lilac bi colour and Ken stocks strike a light a red and yellow medium bi colour which Ken said one of the parents is kenora sunset. With your seedlings its peat and Perlite do you firm it down ? I used some of this Sinclair stuff I bought which has been rubbish for the cuttings I wonder if this is while my germination rates have been low and also loosing 3. I used peat based multipurpose for my lupins and much higher success rate. I hope to try and take some seed this year after my two shows are done.

@raymond, I don't tamp down the mix, and I have a little indoor trowel that I upend to use as a little dibber. It's plastic and about 5mm across and helps me encourage the root into the hole I've made in the soil and I gently move the soil back round the stem of the seedling, and usually to a deeper level than it was previously.
