Raymond there is nothing wrong with those plants they will grow big and strong they do not look like they have a virus you say they have a big root and they have tips so they will grow fine. The roots are the most important and even if the plants were broken they would still be fine. They just look to me like postal damage, the plants have come out from under the mist and are very soft plants which will grow away no problem.

Lou78W I gave station house two orders and if this is the standard of plants they may be my last with them. Got 16 more to come from them. Let's see what pink suffusion and Hapet ideal are like . scrumpy lets see how they grow . Big roots and will need potting on I think soon not a lot of room in a three inch pot. I am sure dahliadave plants will be great. looking forward to getting them tom mcclelland, sues kilmorie, Allan snowfire and some bedding one's. I need to just get better at propagating my own stock then no excuses or complaints ! Hehehe Are you planning to show your dahlias somewhere, @raymond? If all goes to plan dianthus I am going for the Kent novice championship and some other classes all up in the air still need plants first . To be honest will be happy with anything on the Show bench. I have enough Weston pirate so miniature sorted just the rest now. Some ready to pot up tomorrow need to do a proper tally up now.

I need to just get better at propagating my own stock then no excuses or complaints ! Hehehe When you receive plants you pot them into a suitable size pot. Not a lot of root, I plant in 6 cell trays. A bit more 3" square. Bigger still 4" square. The plants I got from Taylor's end of March had minimal root. Much smaller than the ones you've received. So they went into 6 cells. That's how Frank does his cuttings. The ones I received from Station House went into 4" square pots. Some plants bigger than yours, some the same size, some smaller. It depends on the variety. And I'll bet you when you receive mine, you'll realise how bad Halls and Station House are Scrumpy you have to live up to Tel Standards. I am sure they will be fantastic. Having never bought rooted cuttings before and if I saw them in a garden centre or plant sale I would not have picked them. Another thing to add to the learning curve. Tel hopefully they will straighten up . They where potted up and put straight outside with the others today in tonight and the next few nights as temp is dropping. ian they where packed very well can't fault that at all. They look healthy so that is the main thing and yes good size root system Not a lot of room in a three inch square pot.

Ok folks, newbie calling... I have tubers in approx. 8"-10" size pots with foliage to about same height, and cuttings of various stages. At the moment they are all in the cold greenhouse. I am in s e Cornwall and I am thinking of planting out all my stock into borders end of may (is this right or should I be a mid may here?). My question is when do I put cuttings outside (I know if temp drops below 5 to put inside) to harden off? Do they need to Be a certain size or is it just harden off X weeks before planting out? Tel ian Raymond scrumpy Lou78W Cherry dahliadave everyone? Thank you

I would have thought where you are Cat that into the middle of May they should be fine out side for a week before planting out to harden off. Ther should be no need to put them back in the greenhouse just use fleece one sheet of fleece is good for 5 degrees so keeping any threat of frost away. Do not grow them too soft otherwise they will at the first sign of frost cop it. A week to ten days outside should be fine

What a compliment putting my name there. Cat, I would be asking you about dahlias. I almost tried it, but it looked difficult. I grew sweet peas with sweetpea's help on the forum and exhibited them successfully at a large show against two national exhibitors. Now I hate seeing badly grown sweet peas. In other words, I am with you every step of the way. Go girl!

Cat have you read 'Dahlias for Beginners', which is the story of Wildlife Friendly growing dahlias for the first time with Tel's help. Read up to Page 24. This would make a good film, but you would not believe it.

Cat ian Has already answered your question and is much more qualified to answer than me. When I grew from tubers last year for the first time all of them my huge total of 56 big ones hehe plus the bedding. From the middle of May they where all outside I just kept an eye on the Weather. I plant end of May here in the south east and will do the same this year. Dahlias, begonias and summer bedding all in at the same time. I read a tip from les Jackson in one of the dahlia journals or annuals that if a dahlia gets hit by frost it is the sun hitting the ice crystals that cause the problems he says to spray them down with water before sunrise and you should be ok. Fleece is easier And you can stay in bed ! Hehe Just remember to start spraying Now for pests etc... if leaving them out a lot now. As Cherry said you go girl ! Good luck and good fortune.

Cat and dianthus Nothing fancy you want a pesticide and a fungicide . Ultimate bug is fine For general use Rose clear ultra recommended by Ken stock to me bug clear used by Dave gillam fungus clear used by Dave gillam Resolva bug killer this I heard works on Capsid bug so I am using this . I had capsid trouble last year . synthane a systemic fungicide readily available and affordable. Any of the commercial one's Really You can mix the bug clear and fungus clear together As per Dave gillam on YouTube. Just start a regime and stick to it At least every 4 weeks. Don't wait for the signs as then to late as I found out last year with sir Alf. I am sure the experts will give there opinion. People like Ian, Scrumpy etc... Have access to professional grade super strong stuff Eg bumper, amistar, dynamec etc..... dianthus I was referring more to cat as she has big plants now Over 10inches tall grown from tubers which I happily supplied for her and young che to try.
