Advice needed please! On my Winholme Diane (and some other varieties) I've got blooms fully and partially opened. I've grown them 8 up and taken buds down 2 pairs of leaves. Trouble is, the lower buds on each lateral are catching up with the the main bloom. Obviously I only want one of them on each stem to form the replacement bloom not 3 or 4! Do I need to wait until cutting the main bloom before thinning them down to one or could I do this job even earlier? (perhaps as soon as the main bud shows colour?) Had the same problem with other vigorous varieties but others have barely visible buds in the lower leaf joints. Thanks in advance.....

Exhibitors that grow Winholme Diane would grow it 7 up and strip all the way down. I take it you want a second flush of blooms later. your second flush of blooms will be smaller, I would maybe leave 4 shoots per plant. What would anyone else advise ?

Thats right Tel, I am after a second flush on all my plants Tel as I only have 72. Need to cover several shows. My main worry was all these lower buds becoming laterals in their own right and catching up the main bloom taking some of the strength out of it and reducing the size and quality of it. Should I at this stage strip down the lower replacement stems to 1 or do I have to wait till I have cut the main bloom off? I've noticed the second flush are usually a bit smaller though the quality is often excellent to my untrained eye. Would it be normal practice to reduce the numbers on the second flush to maintain the size?
By the way Tel, if you're a RL fan, Salford Red Devils play the Bulls at that little ground of yours on Sunday, anything could happen!

Think by elimination or advice, I need to grow varieties which will readily give me replacement blooms on good long stems. Ross Luke looks a good contender as its thrown good blooms on long stems, after taking only side buds and next pair down. will make it 7 up next time instead of 8 up though, they're a little smaller than I would like. Out of curiosity, can you boost the size of the second flush by greatly reducing the numbers and perhaps taking all the buds down the replacement laterals?

Not sure with the Diane's David only grown them on one flush. Maybe grow 3-4 second flush choosing the 3-4 strongest stems then if they are too small . Maybe next year stop half your plants later than you have this.

Thanks Tel, I will try what you've suggested. Perhaps I should have fully disbudded, (maybe leaving one pair of buds) the stems are a bit thick with leaf joints close together. Next year I want perhaps 6 varieties of 12/14 plants split into two plantings perhaps 2 or 3 weeks apart I did indeed stop them at the same time only having 6 of most cultivars. May even delay stopping the second planting an extra week. Heads full of ideas now. Thanks for the input Tel, much appreciated.

Well 16days to go ! Getting a bit nervous. Got some colour showing some a bit early as flicking but I hope to have a good choice for the day.
Got raisers pride opening and the colour is superb a beautiful pink with a flush of bronze and one lkelsea Carla again colour lovely . Narrows Sonia is flicking and looks a full medium got a Ruskin Michelle opening as well.
What I am most excited about is winholm Diane as it has come through like a rocket and the buds are big . I hope it will make a full small.
@davidv I spread the size of the shoots when I stopped it some bigger some smaller to give me a spread as only got 7 of them.
Dikara superb one flowered and was a just over a Pom haha so the rest are wings and two pairs off.
Had a Mary's flower size good form terrible hehe. Got big buds on hillcrest Jersie and swelling buds and lengthing stems on lots of others.
Exciting but nerve racking.
Fed yesterday evening foliar feed of high potash a different one as the vitax I feel has two much nitrogen. Gave them all a good soak this morning early. Will water again Sunday evening.
Ant powder down tomorrow . Vaseline on as well which I should have already done.
Growing carston suntan in the front garden for display and what a lovely dahlia with long stems . Nice bloom not trying to grow for show so blooms not full size but very nice.

Been away for week, lovely and sunny. Not here at home though, bad rain, plants water logged and in desperate need of TLC. Thank god boys enjoyed our adventures (even if mark ended up in hospital.) Tomorrow I will be gardening in the rain, mainly deheading dahlias...it has to be done

Hope Mark is ok Cat ! Well blistering hot here yesterday and some damage to plants. Leaf scorch and petal damage to just opening ones. Main one's affected grenidor pastelle and kenora sunset. Got to 32 and Sun was fierce. They had been deep watered on Friday as well. Some good growers here hit also. Got a bloom of raisers pride nearly open. Lovely colour but form is rubbish. Tips also discoloured. I would like to spray again with decis or dynamec but is a risk so close to show. 2 weeks today !

Fast becoming dahlia avenue ! Haha loads of buds and colour now cutting in 13 days . This only the small and medium semi cactus . The decs down the bottom out of picture. Min ball in front garden. Some blooms out as well. Not the best but nice and I like them. Dahlia avenue this evening. Raisers pride tonight after a battering in the rain. Lovely colour but form is rubbish. I like it though. First bloom so hope the others better. Makes a medium just !! Grown 6up in a 25litre pot. If I grew again would be 5up. Nice habit and lovely strong straight stems. Have caned the stem on this one just for practise. A young kelsea Carla still a few days away I love the colour. Takes the weather as well this showing potential for next year. Grown 7up in a 25litre pot. First bloom as well so hope the others even better. Got the rest of the buds hopefully times for the show. Carston suntan in front display. Did not try to grow for show . Minimal disbudding. Makes a small easily like this and it Takes the weather I like it . Lovely long strong stems. May keep this for next year. Went through all the plants and put in more ties. Also trying to keep stems away from each other. To give the blooms room.

Ouch Cat I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Good he did not break it ! A bit premature for any results . Let's see what is ready on the day ! A vase of three will do me for the novice although I would like a few more than that ! Hahaha Tel something been attacking wyns. All this brown dot puncturing on the leaves. Not sure if some fungal. They have had spray with decis twice, dynamec twice and majestik twice and last lot a overhead drench of bug clear. Going to spray with Amistar. Buds look fine showing colour don't know if will make it to show though. A little behind Diane and senzoe Ursula.
