Here is Tom mcclelland . I like this centre almost blown was cut on Saturday but keeps a better size where as Hapet ideal every bloom now over size and pirate I don't like the green in the centre and by the time it closes I find the back end gone. This and pixie my min cactus for next year.

Last post my attempt at kiwi Gloria . Did not get one on the bench and I need to decide if Gloria or trelyn if I try again next year . Quite light colour could not get the centre to close nicely. Trelyn for me is pure white. This bloom cut very young and was in water for 5 days. Centre is rubbish.

They all want Mary's jomanda and senzoe Ursula. My boss loves wyns favourite. Did a big vase of dahlias. Looks ok. Must work on my floral art ! It is rubbish ! Hahaha

OK, help request please
I have been advised they are expecting a frost tonight half hour away from me but how do I know when its a proper frost and time to lift the dahlias? What are the signs please? It may not frost here but I want to be on the ball so to speak.
(I have ideas in mind but questioning self as always as its been 30+,years since my last dahlia days watching mum and dad!)

It will blacken and any blooms left on shrivel up. Last year I gave up waiting for the frost and lifted them all in mid November and the field tubers were all ok. I wouldn't panic about lifting them, the tubers being under the soil and the frosted foliage giving some protection. I tend to lift all of 1 variety first and so on. If it cant be done in a day I'll come back and dig the others when I can.

In Northumberland near Hexham. Looks a cracking spot Mark, out in the countryside. Noticed those Teasels in the foreground. I've grown some this year from seed. (good old Wilko) Developing a row of them at the plot for dried flower display. I also have Strawflowers. The foliage on them is massive though the seed spikes will only come next season being a biennial.

Cat I will lift mine second week of November as I have agm and tuber sale the week after . If frost does not hit them cut down about 5 days before you lift them encourages the tuber to start forming new growth eyes.
As David says do what you can and if you can't get them out Immediately they will be fine I did not lift some from pots til December and some you grew this year . It's not so much the frost that kills them they can survive some but if very wet and cold it makes the tubers rot in the ground.

I bought a pack of dahlia's from a garden centre earlier in the year to try. I had grown them previously, but not for several years now. I've had them in pots all summer on the patio, and have kept them well watered. Whilst I've had plenty of foliage, there's been no flowers. I've had them in partial shade, rather than full sun, as that's what one of my gardening books suggested. Can anyone suggest whether I've just got a bad pack, or have I perhaps done something wrong, and what should I do differently with them next year?

I don't no why they have not flowered Andrew . I have some in part shade but they get about 5 to 6 hours of sun per day. Have you fed them regularly.I grow a lot in pots and they are more feed hungry I gave all of mine a top dressing of vitax q4 on top of the liquid feed. I still have 3 varieties to flower but I think it is more they where not the best of plants to start with and planted out very late.

Had a nice evening at Kent dahlia society meeting last night Darren Everest our vice chairman did a picture show and talk of the exhibits he liked at all the shows he attended this year. Some lovely blooms at all the shows.
Nice evening. I took a bloom of Clearview Edie, Clearview Debby and narrows Sonia . Edie they said needs to be a large I trialled as a medium I don't known if I will grow again. Narrows Sonia they liked. Clearview Debby people liked but purely for the garden.
Now trying to figure out what to grow for year.
I need to change my min Dec .
The shortlist so far is
Ryecroft Jan Hillcrest divine Marston lilac Perhaps a barberry .
Dikara superb I have not had a single really good bloom in terms of petal lay. Nice size , good angle and nice centre but petals flick out on me.
I may also change my min ball . Mary's is a very good dahlia but does not agree with me I feel. Things to ponder on over the next couple of months.
Small Dec Small semi cactus Small cactus ? May not grow Min cactus Medium semi cactus Collarette
I am pretty Much decided upon and I have cut the varieties down dramatically so I increase the numbers.
I may trial a medium Dec as never grown one.
