I'm normally a confident person, but I must be honest, since stewarding at Harrogate, and seeing and hearing the judges, well, judge, I keep having self doubts, DC. Bl***y stupid really, as it's not as if this is my first year growing Dahlias, this will be my sixth . Getting an allotment this week though has really spurred me on, and with the tubers on heat and popping out all over the place, the self doubts are taking a back seat for a while. I'm also getting great support, and although it's a long way away, I've joined the Midlands Society, to increase my chances of putting something decent on the bench, with a good dollop of beginners luck as well .
So, whether it cards and medals, or NAS and failure, I'm really going to enjoy the ride.
Well said that man!! Mark don't be put off by Judges , even the best growers have faults on there flowers some Judges see them and some dont , you after focus on your own flowers at a show don't go looking at other exhibitors flowers before you stage your own, I was a steward at Harrogate on the cactus classes what class was you on.

Steve, I'm just going to do my best, and go from there. I was stewarding the miniature ball section, team number 6. Loved the experience, and hoping to do it again, come the 18th of September.

Steve not wanting to sh&t stir but I saw Mark kick your vase as he bumped it on the floor, in fact he did such a good job of it I am putting him on the same class in September hehe. Great advice off Steve just concentrate on your own exhibit do not be put off by other entries leave that to the judges. If you have any problems just ask I will be at Harrogate if you need a any help and a quick staging demo if needed. there is plenty of help on hand. Ian

I get really stressed out about it and I am so slow. If only.

Great for the garden not a show variety remember in America they are interested in colour more than anything else. Have to jump in here on this comment about Parkland Rave... To be fair, an even more widely-winning variety in America is Embrace, which is also uncontested in its subclass like Parkland Rave. Its color is absolutely hideous, and (in my humble opinion) is grown only for those many pretty ribbons they collect on the show bench. Although I'll willingly agree that part of a Parkland Rave's winning charm is that the color is not hideous, I cheerfully suggest that American judges are truly colorblind, as Embrace is by far the ugliest color I have come across in a dahlia.

Great advice indeed, thanks Steve. As I remember it, it was quite close between the two best ones. I couldn't split them, but then again, I've got little experience in the show arena.
Ian, I will take you up on that offer my friend, although in the frenzy, with everybody in the staging zone, you'll be concentrating on your own vases .

No Mark I will always have time for my Dahlia buds ask Steve Mark did not take you long to learn the petal trick hehe, Ian will help and give advice to anyone at the shows he's one of good guys in the dahlia world, but everyone at Harrogate will help a novis so don't think your on your own. The mini ball class at Harrogate don't no who judged it but they got it spot on, 1 st 51 and half pts 2 nd 50 pts 3 48 and half pts, the lad who finished second had a great vase of Blayton lady in red but it was marked at the back it was a shame he only got 14 pts for that vase or he would have won. Your plot get rid of them raised beds, skim top off and then dig it over , Mark meter long beds and meter paths sounds wide path but you need the room to work on your plants.

When I first started showing, that was the first thing I did when I walked into where the exhibitors were doing their staging. From a distance they can all look good, I thought I have no chance in them days. but once on the bench its down to the judge. Then you find its all about what blooms are spot on for the day. Luck can play a part too. I won a bronze medal at Harrogate a few years ago now for 3 Sir Alfs I only had 6 plants of it, but the 3 blooms came off the same plant. Now that is luck.

You're not wrong there Steve, he's an all round top bloke... but don't tell him I said that . Mike Walsh, was supposed to be head judge, but he was late, so Ian called in Phil, didn't get his surname, but a really nice bloke, wore glasses and a trilby hat. Les from Hartlepool, and Neville from Weybridge, made up the rest of the team. I must be honest, I was so concentrating on not dropping a vase, and putting the right cards with the right exhibits, and generally not cocking up, some of the day just flashed past. But to me, they got it right, and worked well as a team, and you can't ask for more than that. I'm going to get rid of the boards and hand dig and weed( can't think where I got that idea from ). Going to make a start tomorrow, so I've got plenty of time before planting in May. If the bed is divided into 1metre strips, would that mean getting 4 plants to a square metre for miniatures and balls, giving me a bed of 44 plants? Or would 6 per metre, be better..
