Miniature Jomanda would not win with me Steve you know that if there were other entries in the class of a similar qualityyes I know it would not win with you Ian and a few other judges I know. Last show I went to mini jo in sm class got 2nd no 1st award given . Great bit of judging hehe Obviously we all have personal favourite and least favourite varieties etc. but for you both to agree ('and a few other judges'...) there must be something not quiet good enough for you to think that with a critical eye and your 'judging hat' on, at top level exhibits.

Hi Moonlight the point we were making is that although Jomanda is dual classified so can be shown up or down small or miniature if it shown in a small ball class they must be bigger than a miniature if not then they must be down pointed or loose points because of the size not being made not up to the small ring but certainly bigger than the miniature ring. Personal variety favourites do not come into the equation when I am judging. I have got to say some judges look to take the easy way out some times by giving the kiwi Gloria or Trelyn the prize instead the Zoe sport. I do like Kiwis but if there are better on the bench then they win. I judged three vases of Mira at Southport and gave them first over three bases of Trelyn to the disgust of the grower of the Trelyn now when Pointed out why he reluctantly accepted and at out Vagabonds show last year I judged Scrumpys vase of Zoe sport above kiwis. So a judge should judge what he sees on the bench without likes or dislikes

I like Snoho Doris and snoho Sonia also caught my eye. To Many lovely dahlias shame I dont have more space. Have you seen Clearview Debby cici in the flesh ? some pictures look great others not sure now. Saw a couple of hapet ball I like the look of from Peter haslhofer in Austria. Maybe next year. Haven't seen C. Debby, but have heard lovely things about it from growers. Grew Snoho Doris in the overflow garden for the first time, so it bloomed late and neglected, but it impressed me with the quantity of nice looking blooms with a subtle color. Truthfully, I had no idea how well it shows, or I might have groomed it a bit more. Saw Snoho Sonia in a public garden, and am working on a trade to get it, among other varieties that caught my eye.

Sometimes as a judge you have to make difficult decisions and not everyone will be happy with them but you always have to be fair. Always.

Hi Moonlight am not a judge , but I know when am in with a chance of a red card, Like Ian said top varieties can be beaten with shall we say lesser varieties? Providing they are grown well and judged fairly , a few years back I put a vase of 5 Rhonda up they where spot on best I've grown ,had a quick luck at all the exhibits before the judging, and new if he behaved himself I had chance of a medal with them, on my return to the show had silver medal and best exhibit in SHOW, kiwi grower was going ape, " Poms should never beat kiwis or Diane's " he said. his exhibit looked ok , till you had a close look and spotted all the faults, He was a brave judge he got a right ear bashing.

Maybe instead of top varieties we could think of them as 'popular choices for top varieties' and 'less common choices for top varieties'. After all we won't know which is top variety is top until the judging has finished. May the best dahlia win.ste b do you only show up North or do you show at the National as well?ian I'll ask my Dad for a progress report tomorrow re. pink seedling number 3 from 2013. All I can say about it is, I am sure that he won't let it out of his sight until he is happy with it but like I always do I will pass comments on especially when it is about one of his seedlings. Can't wait to see the 2015 seedlings both his and mine or should I write mine and his. I won't ever be an exhibitor at Harrogate or the National but I am going to really try in the shows that I do and if the best judges pick the best bloom on the day of each class, then I will respectively be a happy woman even if I don't get placed.

Thank you dahliadave Looked it up 2001 that's not that old. Really good ones are around for years - looked up some of the ones that I grow that Dad has mentioned before as old varieties, Willo's Violet 1937! Amazing that old and still a winner. that your Allan Snowfire does well for you to.
