Just standing it on the soil will be O.K. Doesn't need a sealed bottom

That comment seems to have disappeared, Raymond . Probably one of the mods has removed it. The English of it didn't make sense.

derekbrooks I read back my posts last night and reworded it Derek my typing is totally rubbish at times. Sorry if my grammar is appauling and I don't make sense can I ask a question on making pot tubers. I have ordered some single plants to try eg sues kilmorie, raisers pride , Allan snowfire etc... Once I pot them up and grow on a bit can I still take cuttings for pot tubers in May/June will I need to stop them early and take cuttings from the new side shoots. Just wondering if taking them in May/June will still be ok time wise for pot tubers

If you want to take cuttings from these plants this year, Raymond ,you would have to stop them to get side shoots but I'm not sure there would be time this year for them to form tubers. Why don't you plant them in the garden and grow them on to flower. They would surely form tubers then and you could take cuttings next year. However I don't grow pot tubers myself so I think Tel knows more about them than me because I know he does and he may give you different advice.

Raymond, Try to take the cutting as early as you can, tip cuttings are fine if you get them rooted by second week in May two weeks in a pot is fine. They can then be planted out the end of the first week of June. The mother plant grown on as you tuber or planted out also. Or as you say take the cuttings and plant the original plant. At that time of the year (getting into May) it is a little late to expect to take side shoots, but can be done. The cutting will make a tuber and who knows it may be a big one it may be small but never the less it will throw some cuttings. Personally I would root the cutting and plant that on, young plants usually romp away without a check and will develop into viable plants. Miniature varieties I have grown in a pot in the ground as a plant the main tuber will remain mostly in the pot feeder roots come out of the pot and the plant will produce showable blooms. I have also grown plans in basket pots (ones for pond plants) again with good results this helps with varieties that do not always make good tuber eg Barbarry Pip. Try this way with your mother plant. Good luck

Thank you ian great ideas. Will give it a try . With the pot tubers in general are they best planted In the pots into the ground or can they be done in the small pots planted into large pots and you might have 3 or 4 in an 30 litre pot For example Or a trough. These are for stock for 2016. I have done this with begonias before and works well. I might get some other westons for stock plants from my plant sale. Only have pirate but want buccaneer and Spanish dancer would like some of those josudi to try. Do you know where you can source the josudi from ? Many thanks

Up to now, taken 98 cuttings, 30 of these are Garden Friends, the first 20 cuttings of Garden Friends have now rooted. Doing well so far with no losses of any of the cuttings, normally lose a few in February, with less losses come March.
