Hi Guys,
Something has been eating the stem's of my dahlias just underneath or around the growing tip. Whatever is causing it is eating through the stem or bud of whatever if fancies ! I have sprayed with bugclear however this has made no difference, I'm wondering what's doing the damage and what i can use to treat it ?
Regards Gareth

I think it could be some kind of caterpillar gareth I had a similar problem early in the season with something chewing through the stems and buds of my iris. Bugclear has not worked for me and I have had to get a pro one. I have found resolva bug killer better. It is only a contact insecticide with up to 2 weeks residual action. I would spray at night. Good luck .

If it's earwigs try some ant powder around the lower stem to deter them climbing up as per ian suggestion. I had something burrow into the buds of my iris and ate the buds from the inside out, also chewed buds off and also chewed loads of leaves. That was some kind of caterpillar to much damage for earwigs. Good luck Gareth hope you sort the problem.

Thanks for the responses guys, I've ordered some Resolva online and vassed the stems !
Oddly only my Hillcrest Candy seems to be badly affected by the problem pest, perhaps they're picky ! haha

Earwigs are pretty thick. They choose a plant, disappear during the day, and as soon as it gets dark they come back to the spot where they left off. So nip out with your torch at night, find the little wiggy and proceed to squash it

Shame you cannot apply the same method of control with some growers! Some of those are as described. hehehe

Good Evening everyone I have just been informed tonight of the passing of the great Joe Kidd a stalwart of Darlington Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society and the National Dahlia Society. R.I P Joe Received the Dahlia Annual today. There is an Obituary for John Parkinson an appreciation by Joe Kidd. Seems strange to see that on the day of Joe Kid's funeral. R.I.P Joe & John.

Hi Tel yes very thought provoking John (Parky) was a very good friend of mine and Joe was a member of the northern dahlia committee as was John, I was with Joe three weeks ago at a meeting, he was a very polite mild mannered man a man who liked to do things by the book and was the voice of reason on many debates and a man to put us all right on points of order. When I looked at the obituary in the Dahlia annual for John I thought of both John and Joe remembering how Joe so read the passages at Johns funeral in his North East accent. Joe's funeral was very well attended today RIP Joe.
Joe raised a numbers of very good Dahlias over the years.
