My Dad's been digging:
With his trusty Newcastle Drainer he has been digging down 15-17 inches to improve drainage. The trees are being cut down, roots dug up and loads of manure dug in.
He is trying to get the water to run away from the garden in the field behind (ours)

Don't mind us (Pirate wants me to show her how I 'do' pictures.)
"So that's how you create one?" "Oi!" "You can do a question mark!" "Oi! You are writing what I'm saying" "Copy Cat"
(She is now trying very hard not to laugh!) Don't mind us, nothing to see here!
"Now you do lot's of ..." "Pictures..."
So there you go if you ever need someone to edit your photos - Pirate's your gal!

that looks like a lot of hard work, hope it works for you grindle I take no credit for the digging. It's all Dad's effort. He is clearing away the trees etc. needs more space for the dahlias. You'd never have guessed that would you?

Popped down me Dad's today There has been a lot more digging and a big bonfire later. This is the view back from last time, so the greenhouse is behind me and at the far end is the ditch that he dug out to run some of the water away. You get a much better picture of how high the dug over mounds are.

ZOMG that is a HUGE amount of digging, moonlight.
I get a sore back and a burning need for whisky after just diging a couple of square meters, let alone a big area like that !
Is ALL of that space just going to Dahlia's ?

Is ALL of that space just going to Dahlia's ? Yes it's for his seedlings. Yes it is gradually reverting back to how I remember it as a child. I remember once but only once he had a Polly tunnel great fun to play in and even better to watch the grown ups to put up... Bit like you really Roofy. Fun, Fun, Fun!

Clearview Edie was one of the tubers that we ordered and the Edies that we received were small. It was very late to get growing but it got there in the end. It made a very odd shaped tuber.
Of all the tubers this one is getting the special treatment (Even has a soil thermometer) and has had his beady eyes on it and nothing, until Saturday...
So lets play 'how many eyes can you spot on the Edie tuber?'

Moonlight I think there could be a many as 8 or 9. A cluster of 4 a single to the left of the cluster and 3 or 4 to the right of the cluster . Not all viable yet but I hope you get them all. One winholm Diane pot tuber I have with 10 eyes. I have been offered a plant of Edie I might try it. Depends on how my cuttings go.

Yes Moonlight and he grew it very very well. He grew Sundance also but dropped it because to taller a grower and heavy centre. I am going to try Sundance with Ian suggestion of basket pots. restricted roots to make a medium grown 9up as suggested by David hall Also one grown 6 up for a large. Let's see what happens. Sundance makes the most amazing tubers a solid mass ! I went for the pot tuber for space. Will try the basket pots with a few different one's. I think I am one of very few growing Clearview debby. Whether it will be any good we shall see but it is a good looking flower My taste. Heard from the parshalls to grow her 8up as a large sml Dec.

Moonlight what compost does your dad have the tubers in ? Looks nice and open structure Humax Original peat based with sharp sand. Yes Moonlight and he grew it very very well. He also recommended getting 8 foot canes for your Sundance and agrees it does make a lovely tuber.

Dad agreed with me and the broken and badly damaged lobes were removed. Not so scary now. it does annoy me though how much damage they find acceptable to post. Last time I emailed and ended up with replacement tubers I had bought a 3 pack rather than just the one. Even with loads broken off they all grow so I ended up with what I already have. I've also got a plant from Station House coming and going by what Dad and I already have, we should have plenty between us. It'll be interesting to compare with each other and hearing what Dad thinks, whether or not they have changed over the years. Last year one of the blooms looked a slightly different shade in certain lights but not enough difference - more a wishful hope.
Then of course I have my Fred 4 Downham Dec seedling, like to do a better comparison.
