Tiny soaking wet steps now moonlight relentless rain this afternoon and tonight. Might not get anything on the bench. Hey ho ! Totally understand. Growing dahlias is one thing but if you have spent the year hoping that you will be able to enter a couple of classes and then you can't because the dahlias are ruined, it is really disappointing. Couldn't enter my mediums, Sir Alf, the only miniature dec I had was 1 bloom and no small decs, no large poms etc.
Really didn't think I would have anything to enter but all I can say is Thank Goodness for Pirate, Weston Pirate this time - rather than my Pirate Yellow Wellies.

Looks pretty good Moonlight, what happened with the Poms staged as they are? Are they staged in oasis?

The poms look drunk don't they ian? They didn't look quite that when they were being judged. I used a mixture of newspaper and oasis. Basically because I haven't cracked with the oasis yet, while my Dad is a bread and butter Newspaper man.

2 days back at work and I feel emotionally drained but working part time does have its advantages, it means that I get to spend the last 2 days of the girls' holiday with them.

'The Seedling Times'
Tad disappointed with my red Peach Delight seedling. Talked to my Dad about it and he thinks that there isn't enough petals on it - the gaps between the petals are too big for it to be a really good one and he knows that I am trying to grow a really good one - rather than just a pretty one. (It's in me blood). The thing is with my Dad if he says something, he is just being honest. Especially with my lack of space situation, if I ask him (and the emphasis is on the if I ask him,) he will be honest. He never rams his opinions down my throat and is very encouraging, encouraging but realistic. Never wants to falsely get my hopes up but personally, I would rather go with his experience - saves time and also a lot of heartache. Anyway so the red is a no. However, he does like this one...
It's an Eastwood Moonlight seedling.
So there you go, here ends my Seedlings Update.

Too much excitement tension and stress building on the dahlia forum at the moment. We have another couple of shows looming but I am not saying when until after but we are hoping that Fairy will have a chance to enter the dahlia class.

..... I was very lucky in the show yesterday. Entered 7 classes, 5 1sts, a 2nd. Best Novice and Intermediate exhibit = National Dahlia Society Bronze Medal and the Intermediate Shield. When you consider how awful it has rained round here and spoilt lots of my dahlias, I was very lucky. Especially with my Weston Pirate. Wonderful dahlia. So that's it, the only classes that I can enter are the 'Senior Classes' which have those people that exhibit and win at the National and Harrogate 'Special Classes' and the Single Bloom vase - open to all. Very Lucky, Very Happy. Hence Very Tired Teddy Bear last night.
Wait... what..... FIVE first place ? FIVE ? And the Legion d'Ahlia from the National Association, along with the Shield ? My GOODNESS Moonlight, that is FABULOUS. Darned well done !!!!!!

Thanks Roofy.
Been a busy household.
Girls have used their last day of their school holiday making chocolate truffles and Christmas Lanterns.
That Fairy's Hannah Festival is good enough on Sunday.
They were busy with Grandad yesterday, making their gardens on a plate.
Now that is for tomorrow. Grandad has been busy himself. We'll find out what he has done tomorrow..... and the girls will to.
It is going to be a very, very busy weekend - HH is really looking forward to next weekend.

Well the chocolate truffle production has begun in earnest. Mixture made yesterday and today rolled into balls, rolled in currently 100s and 1000s, then placed in mini cake cases.

Lots of mmmmmmmmm and yummmmmmm and chocolately faces and laughter. The mixture makes 30 truffles but they only need 6 per entry. They can make up to 2 entries. At the ratio of mixture making it into the paper cases, not sure if they will make 12 but at the end of the day they are doing something that they would not have made.

Roofy said: I mucked it up. Too much excitement.Fairy's Dahlia is called Hillcrest Hannah Pirate's Dahlia is called Amber Festival.
bit of a derr brain. They are both yellow but different sizes. So in theory would not be in the same class as each other. Truth be told I don't like the Decorative dahlias as much as the spiky cactus and semi cactus but after being sent one from a stunning dark one called Marston George... I've been seduced by the beautiful range of deep colours that the Decs have.
So my plan not to have to potentially compete against one of them, sort of got erm compromised.
