I take it that the Downham Royal is a plant that you - or Dad - grew ? Yes Roofy it is an old variety that we both grow. A dark purple ball dahlia. A family favourite.

Downham Royal The centre has a blue purple tinge. It is a difficult dahlia to photo because it can look redy purple or this dark purple, depending on the light.

Mini Update: I haven't dug up any yet but I have moved 1 tub to our front porch. So no more rain and I am going to let it dry out naturally. I think he has a long journey ahead of him roofgardener.

Sometimes when I read the dahlia forum posts I think 'Yay! I've done something right.' Other times it is a panic button on the full Red Alert. Today it is the later with posts warning the risk of leaving them too long in the ground.

I've brought 4 of my Bill Seedlings up to the house - it has been advertised as been snow and they are in small buckets pots. So they would be very easy to be killed if it snows as it has been forecast. Family commitments has meant that I have been unable to spend any time digging up the dahlias. So potentially I could loose a lot if it snows.
Currently our house is still without heating. Hopefully that will change soon.
Hopefully.

4 trimmed seedling tubers. Waiting for their ride to Grandad. They've booked a vacation somewhere warmer while they rest and hibernate for the Spring.

We are having a gas engineer booked in to re-pipe the gas inside the house, so in theory no more internal gas leak = it will be safe to have the heating and gas on the hob! So that is booked for Wednesday. Looking forward to it. Currently not worrying about the tubers in the house. It is not like we've got the central heating up on high!
Re. Colour, I don't thing that my Dad has been very big on colour - he is more of a dahlia 'form' perfectionist. Where as me, well I still haven't got a clue what I am talking about but I am attracted to deep dark purple and red.

Yeah go husband! Great news.
I lost a ring in my parents veg plot one spring and then found it when I was cutting the courgettes in the autumn it was just sat on the soil under a leaf but I was very down all those months.
