Awwwww.....I didn't know you had "mislaid" your ring .....sooooo pleased it has turned up It had been lost for about a month. There are so many things worse in the world and a ring is 'just' a possession but I felt awful to have lost it. Both for my Husband as it was a symbol of future life long commitment but also for my daughter that I have promised it to in the future (I have 2 rings Fairy and Pirate like different ones which helps) and by loosing it I felt as if I had broken my promise to her.
Having it back - I am happy again*. Normally I'm more laid back 'it'll turn up again' attitude when I loose something but not this time. I am one of those people who can look and look for something to no avail and then suddenly glance up at see it. It didn't work this time. I was secretly convinced that I had washed my hands and it had gone down the plug hole.
Before I felt sad inside and guilty if I did anything else other than look for the ring. I didn't like walking down the garden in case I actually stood on my ring and pushed it deeper into the ground. Thought about Metal Detectors.
I know that there are times when HH doesn't believe me when I say, yes there are other things more important than Dahlias.
*Will be a lot happier when we get the heating back on.

We must have something like a Gazillion pairs of Scissors in this house - and can I find a single pair???
The Sock Monster must have a relative staying... and all I wanted to do was trim a few wispy bits off of the ends of the tubers.
My Dad is coming round to collect at some point tomorrow and I wanted them all neat and ready to go.
Hay Hoe.

It was trophy night on Tuesday which was very bad timing for us with the heating engineers coming the next day but this year we all went and met my Dad there. We stayed for the trophy presentation and a bit of the buffet and then it was back home to the pre heating madness. In the past my Dad and I have sat and fine toothed the latest new Year book, devouring news of the Next Year's show classes. This (other than the stress of the heating repair) it was nice to have my family with me. Fairy sat on a seat at the end of the row and as soon as they called her name to collect the Children's Cup - she shot up that aisle. Loved it.
I am a very proud Mum and Daughter. I have the photos to prove it.
Also collected my trophy and medal. They engrave the medals and trophys at our town society but my county doesn't do it any more (due to cost.) So I am very lucky because they have taken mine with the others and they have been done at the same time. I had my NDS bronze medal engraved with my county name, Intermediate and the year at the back.
It cost me £10 - worth every penny.

Pirate was happy the 2016 yearbook and membership ID card is a bright yellow. Last year the children’s entries were lower than previously – especially in the Autumn show as Pirate and Fairy were the only ones that entered. After the show I got chatting with committee members who told me that I should let them know our ideas and suggestions – as to what the girls really enjoyed etc. So I did. I asked the girls which classes that they had really liked doing – cooking and anything to do with chocolate was high on the list. I know that they both liked the photography class and I thought that anything that involved growing something was good (especially as it is a horticultural society). We wouldn’t have grown those radishes if it hadn’t have been for the ‘grow a vegetable’ class.

2016 Children's Classes with points awarded towards the Children's Cup (which Fairy won this year and Pirate has come 2nd for 2 consecutive years.) are:
Spring
Make a Lily the Ladybird* Make 3 Sugar mice* A photo of an animal
Summer
Arrange flowers in a kitchen container Potato print picture* 6 scones
Autumn
3 Meringue Snowmen (recipe included in year book) A wooden spoon animal Grow 12 'Cherry type' tomatoes Make a Stand up Christmas Tree*
I think that these are a good range of children's classes. The ones with the * all have an instruction information sheet that you collect at the Horticultural shop (potentially good for business but also possible gamble in case people forget to go). A cooking class for each show (I am guessing that the Sugar mice are food). The photo in the Spring class will be popular (well it is in our family). Flower arrangement classes are popular at the show so I think that that is a nice class in the Summer class. The scones can be fruit or cheese (Pirate has already decided to include cherries in her scones.) and your choice of recipe which I think is a good choice - if you are going to make a couple of batches of scones you really should make some that you like eating! I think that the Autumn show is the one that HH is likely to be dreading already. He won't be that stressed about the wooden spoon animal because that can be done in advance but the Meringue snowmen take between 45 - 60 minutes to cook and we don't have a particularly good record of making things in advance. I think that getting the children to grow the tomatoes is a really good idea.
I think that this combination of classes will be popular. Obviously this will mean that it is going to be highly competitive - especially in our family. Pirate is desperate not to come 2nd in the cup a third time......... Bring it on 'eh girls?

There has been a big change in the Open show classes (not towards the children's cup but with a prize of £5 for 1st, £3 for coming 2nd and £2 for 3rd place) - the Spring Easter Bonnet / Cap class has been replaced (Much to HH's relief this is probably on his loathe / stress list because they are so very, very involved and high risk on the 'tear factor'. Summer's Largest Sunflower head has gone as well. There were no entries at all last year (feel a bit guilty about that) - going from previous year's enormous specimens (which put us all off because the girls' ones looked tiny and so we focused on other things instead, Amber Festival and Hillcrest Hannah for County dahlia shows...)
For 2016 we have 3 growing Open Classes:
Pot of tulips or daffodils for the Spring Show Potato challenge (a very competitive class) for the Summer Show Largest Pumpkin for the Autumn Show.
The seed Potato and pot to grow the potatoes in & the Pumpkin seeds are collected from the Horticultural shop (so everyone has a level playing field and fair).

I also included some feedback on the dahlia classes in with the feedback of the Children's classes. I thought it was worth trying again as last year they added extra classes.
In 2014 the ball class was: A vase of 3 miniature / small ball dahlia. Only 1 class for ball dahlias (where as there had been multi classes for semi/cactus and decorative - miniature and small separated.)
In the 2015 Yearbook instead of that single ball dahlia class, there was 4! A vase of 3 miniature Ball, vase of 3 small Ball A single bloom of Miniature Ball and a single bloom Small Ball.
Result!
I am glad that told them my feedback / suggestions we had awful weather and I didn't have a vase of 3 miniature ball or vase of 3 small ball. but I was able to enter in the single bloom ball classes.

There have been 2 new classes added this year. We now have a single bloom of miniature semi/cactus and a single bloom of any type that have not already been listed classes.
The dahlias are highly competitive classes but by introducing the 'single bloom' (in addition to the 'vase of 3') classes more people can potentially enter. We haven't all got enormous gardens and huge allotments dedicated to dahlias.
Especially when we have absolutely atrocious weather and ruin the majority of the blooms like this year. Not everybody is able to put up covers to protect their prized exhibition blooms.
So I included it in my letter from the girls and I and handed it in; I don't like it when people walk round moaning about something but do not actually tell people that make the decisions. I write down and hand it in, so much more satisfying than being grumpy and then let people who make the decisions carry on.
I asked my Dad what he thought about the Dahlia classes......... Need a single bloom Miniature Dec class because there are so many good ones out there.
I agree Dad, I'll ask again next year - Well you never know!
