It's lovely when you actually see them isn't it peony , I've only seen ours 'in the flesh' a few times at night so far but there appear to be a couple of different ones coming almost every night on the cameras, they don't seem keen on snails though, there is an enormous snail which has been caught on camera a few times with the hedgehog walking straight past it ignoring it!

I don't think they like the large snails SueA, I noticed last year the broken snail shells I saw around the garden were from small snails and on one occasion when we saw the hedgehog eating the food pellets there was also a large snail eating one as well, the hedgehog ignored it completely

I think our hedgehogs must be too well fed peony , I've seen ours on the camera with a great big slug & a snail, think it prefers 'Spike's Dinner' nibbles.

You could be right SueA, I didn't get round to putting the hedgehog pellets out yesterday evening before I went to my garden club meeting and when I got home just after 10pm OH said "the security light kept coming on, you forgot to feed the hedgehog and he's been running around the patio looking for his food"

That is amazing and peony's comment really made me laugh. I did not even know there was special commercial food for hedgehogs. Must tell a flying friend this on Monday as he showed me his hedgehog box in Ely.

Must tell a flying friend this on Monday as he showed me his hedgehog box in Ely. I buy my Hedgehog food from Tesco Cherry, it's £1.99 per bag of pellets which last quite a long time. Its a lot easier than tins of dog food and cheaper

My hedgehogs like the £1.99 Tesco pellets best too peony, I get the 'Spike's dinner' ones sometimes if I'm in one of the garden centres & they're on offer at £4.99 for a bigger pack. They do packs of semi-soft nibbles which are a bit more expensive(about £6.99 I think) & little trays of 'Spike's' dinner in foil trays too Cherry like those posh cat foods - usually about 99p each! Our hedgehogs aren't fussy though & will eat anything put down for the birds too especially the dried mealworms.

For the last 3 nights I've had 2 hedgehogs visiting and needed more food for them, went to Tesco and they have stopped selling it Tried my nearest garden centre but they don't stock it. Found it on-line at Amazon but they only sell it as an 'add-on' so I'd have to spend £20 on something else to get it. SueA, I've got mealworms I can put out but not sure whether suet nibbles are OK for hedgehogs? Also will sultanas be suitable? I don't want to put out cat/dog food as too many cats around here. The hedgehogs pellets were ideal because the cats ignored them.

You must have choosy cats peony, I've seen them on camera nibbling the hedgehog food at night here! It's a pain if Tesco have stopped selling it, I haven't been in the big store here for a while to see if they still have it. The last 'Spike's' food I got was from a pet & garden centre which is part of the Wyevale chain but you don't see it in many garden centres. I put food out for the birds & hedgehogs at the same tiime at night & I think the hedgies eat sunflower hearts & the odd suet nibble. They also like chopped up plain peanuts & I think sultanas are fine & bits of chopped apple & mild cheddar cheese as well.

More likely over-fed SueA, some of them look overweight Thanks for your suggestions for different foods, I tried adding a few suet nibbles, sultanas and mealworms to last night's food and its all disappeared Thanks also for the Arkwildlife website, I'll probably give their dried food a try if I can't get any locally next week.
