Our hedgehogs are back, the sunshine yesterday must have woken them up, well at least one of them, it could be a couple or the same one which came back a few times during the night & posed on the infrared camera. The woodmouse made an appearance as well & about 3 of the local cats who prowl around.

Yes grindle the cats around here love hedgehog food/bird food/any kind of food! They especially like those little hard hedgehog biscuits but then the blackbird likes those as well - & the woodmouse, it's just a free-for-all in our garden, whoever gets to the food first eats it, I just try to put out plenty on various trays & the ground so that they all get some. I keep thinking I'll make one of those little hedgehog feeding stations where you cover the food bowl with a box with a small hole cut in it & a brick or similar on top to stop the cats knocking it off but I'd have to find somewhere to put it first.

I am Rather Excited about this I'd been hearing shuffling and sniffing in the dead leaves around the chicken house, and by my compost bin - my computer is right by the window next to it. However I just put it down to rats/mice to be honest! Then I found what I thought was hedgehog poo under my bird feeders a few times. But it was still a surprise when at 2.30am the other night, my husband opened the kitchen door, and found this on the door mat! (He was out there to check on a bantam that's had a bad cold, poor girl, we're still medicating her!) We watched Hoggins go back to the compost bin and chicken house, so I guess he's been the shuffly one, possibly even living under there? I've been trying to make the garden wildlife friendly, and I guess I'm succeeding. Quite surprised to have Mr Hoggins around here at all, but it's a quiet cul-de-sac we're in, with one or two big wild gardens. Our local hedgehog rescue lady says cat biscuits are better than wet cat food to feed, but I've been putting out a bit of both, figuring Hoggins might like wet food this weather. It's been cleared up regularly but I can't honestly vouch who by!

That's lovely Bess, he's probably snaffling any chicken feed dropped around as well, our hedgehogs aren't fussy & eat dry hedgehog biscuits, semi moist hedgie food, mealworms, suet nibbles, peanuts, bird food - whatever is within their reach, I would put out a saucer/shallow dish of water for him though if you haven't already.

Made me giggle, sweetpea , but I hope grindle doesn't mind! Yes SueA I have got water out, several extra bowls at the moment actually, as I was feeling sorry for the birds. Although he could pinch water out the bowl the hens have in the garden if he wanted, too. I hadn't put any food out for the hog tonight (I'm off silly early this morning to visit Mum, and I was too busy) but I had left the kitchen door open at 11pm tonight. Heard surprisingly loud crunching in the cats bowl in the kitchen, went to see what the heck the cat was doing, but it wasn't the cat... Mr Hoggins had invited himself in for a snack When he exited stage left (towards chicken house) I put a bowl of crunchies out near there. I can now hear him scrunching away outside the window as I write lol! ETA - I think it's a Mrs Hoggins, actually. There's at least one other smaller hog with it. There was such a racket going on by the grub that I opened the window and took a photo with the flash pointed in that direction, which revealed two of them.

The cat will have to fight them off now they've found their way into the kitchen Bess! They both look quite small on that photo, maybe you've got a complete family visiting or living in the garden. One of our hedgehogs must have been hiding in the border waiting for me to put food out last night because as soon as I'd gone back in the house it appeared & was chomping away standing on the food tray!

One of our hedgehogs was out in daylight yesterday which was worrying, I thought I heard shuffling at the end of the garden when I was watering in the morning & when 'Tiger' the local cat was following me round she dived under the ivy tree & the hedgehog was snuffling around there. I steered Tiger away & put a bit of food & water down where it had been but didn't see it again until later in the afternoon when it seemed to be hiding by the pond, I was worried about it but when I put the food out on the lawn in the evening around 9.45pm it appeared as soon as I went indoors & set about eating & drinking. I think maybe it was just too hot, hungry & dehydrated as it seemed to be moving fine & trotted off down the side of the house when it had finished, they must be suffering as there are no slugs & snails around as the ground is bone dry around here. Hiding by the pond Tucking into food Adjusted the setting on the camera so it looks a bit lighter here

glad it was ok SueA I guess all the wildlife is suffering with lack of water, I keep topping up the water for the birds so I know they have plenty.
