Yes sweetpea tigerella tomato is a very good one and I have Rosie's seeds of this, but I think I am too late to grow it from seed now. I will be going to the garden centre shortly to shortcut the tomatoes. Not grown any myself this year.Still a short ass then Tel?

I'm trying a few new ones this year, apart from Alicante which I have grown often. Sweet Aperetif and Black Opal A few allotment folk have been planting their toms in their tunnels quite early for the last few years, so thismorning I planted out 2 Black Opal in the warmest part of the border.........see what happens..... Do let me know how you get on with the Sweet Aperatif, Lou78W . We can compare notes. Mine will be in the conservatory, bur as I have nine of them, I may try one or two outside, to see what happens. Of course !! I will be growing mine in the greenhouse and in the polytunnel too.

I bought my tomatoes and they were fresh in and just 99p. Sweet Aperatif is one of them. I am just now sorting the strings up to wind around the plants. I bought Red Alert to plant outside because I have grown this twice before and it is a good bush tomato. ladybird sent my first seeds.

roofgardener raised a good point in his thread about mulching the tomato pots. I have never done this. Should I?

I don't mulch as such, as I don't grow outside....however I do top up the compost on pots, which is the same thing really. The plants I grow in the polytunnel border are grown within plastic waterers and I often top up the compost within the central tube...this enables the plants to grow more anchorage roots...and will help support more fruit....

Good for me Lou78W. Thank you. I have to top up as well and mine are in the greenhouse. Also, I notice the leaves cover the pots. I managed to obtain a Tigerella tom from friend in Ely, so now I have all my favourites.

Battling the fight for tomatoes at the moment. I have had blossom end rot for first time but as my first season growing in greenhouse I am having to get my eye in I suppose. Seems to be mainly the beef affected. I have been removing affected ones as soon as discovered and also leaves shading the trusses (as well as stopping and removing side shoots and feeding!) Anyway, today I got my first good size classic showing a good full covet flush of red colour so fingers crossed.

Irregular watering can cause that to happen Cat. I've found using Epsom salts in the watering can weekly reduces the problem and keeps the foliage and whole plant healthier. Some tomatoes don't like to be trained cordon style, I tried growing Marmande that way and the plants just try to revert to their natural growth habit. My Alicante/Tres cantos on the other hand grow fine trained up strings. I only tend to stop them when they reach the roof of my greenhouse!

Thanks @davidv did think it was watering related. Lack of calcium can be a factor too and our water here has little added to it its o natural. When I grew outdoors in Lincolnshire I never had any problems but here in s e Cornwall blight got them outside last two years. So far I am blight free outdoors. All good fun!

Picked first greenhouse Shirley tomato today and it tasted good! They used to be grown for shows years ago, then we had Gold Star, followed by Cedrico, now it seems it is Cappricia.
