That pun was SO bad daitheplant , that I am copywrighting it as one of my own You plagiarist you. That is actually the name of a documentary series about Greggs the bakers. I thought a Plagiarist was somebody who played the Plagiar ? (a medieval musical instrument distantly related to the Haulm ? ) ANYWAY.... I'm having second thoughts about my whole growing strategy. I think my efforts with the Heliothermal Plantopticon was just self-indulgence, and a desire to play with toys. (somebody please gag daitheplant before he unleashes a Tsunami of "I-told-you-so's" ) So I germinate, and "force-grow" some onions seeds. Then what ? I don't have space to keep many of them in the 'Tunnel. But I can't plant them out: the December/January frosts will just kill them. So... my current thinking is... ..well... firstly accelerate the soil reclamation project, or even abandon it. Try and "clear the decks" in the 'Tunnel and allocate 70% of the space just for gravel trays full of Onions seeds. If I can sustain a minimum temperature of 7 degrees centigrade, then they MIGHT germinate ? Especially if I put the seeds in the freezer for a week or two FIRST, to make them think that winter has 'been and gone', and that spring is on the horizon ? After all, I'm really only trying to 'bring on' some EARLY 'F1 Toughball' onions to start the ball rolling in May/June - the rest of the crop can just be sowed directly into outdoor boxes, and take their chances with nature ? At 7 degrees, they won't grow quickly, even when germinated. (?). So I can keep them in the gravel trays/seedling pots .. perhaps until early Spring ? (if they're reasonably well spaced out, and the gravel trays are deep enough). The remaining 30% of the space would be dedicated to the giant Kelsae "show" onions. They would get the heated propagator boxes as very gentle "plantpot warmers", the growlight, access to the Spa, high-speed broadband, etcetera. I dunno... I'd appreciate your thoughts on this ?

Roofus, for a start. The player of a Plagiar is actually called a " Plagiarologisticist". As for the onions, I would sow groups of them in small pots and use clear plastic bottles with the bottom cut off as propagators, They work for me.

Roofy I think if you sow seeds in your gravel trays & just leave them open & out in the polytunnel at 7 degrees then it will be hit & miss whether they germinate at this time of year & if you leave them in cold damp compost some could rot before or soon after germination but you could try some in pots as Dai suggests, if you haven't got any bottles to put over them clear sandwich bags work just as well. Don't sow all your onions in one basket or eggs in one polytunnel!

Hmm... useful tips daitheplant and SueAI can put my gravel trays on a bed of insulating material (to keep them off the cold standing), and wrap them in clingfilm. I'll also give Dai's idea with the bottles a try ! Once they have germinated, I presume I can take the "protection" away and just let them grow at 7 degrees ?

Well, a milestone moment tonight.
I planted my first six Kelsae seeds. Into oversize seed-pots, in a gravel tray, resting on a bed of soil,in turn inside one of the heated propagators.
I'm not sure that configuration will reach 18 degrees germination temperature; I'll fit the temperature logger tomorrow and see whats occuring.

Roofus, believe it or not, the cooler you can germinate the seeds, the stronger they will be.

Well, I DO like to chill out in my Polytunnel daitheplant - do you have any thoughts about what sort of germination temperature range is likely to work with Kelsae's ?
