Umm... thats around 18 degrees isn't it daitheplant ? ? I stuck the Datalogger into one of the Kelsae seed pots, and despite not really being in proper contact with the propagator soil, it was at 20 degrees, which pleased me 'cos I was worrying that I wouldn't be able to get it that high. I've wound the wick down a bit.. lets see where we are tomorrow. Of course, this was during VERY mild weather. We shall see if it can sustain this when the cold weather arrives. Hows it going with the rebuilding work on the greenhouse ?

Roofus, for a start. The player of a Plagiar is actually called a " Plagiarologisticist". .... I came across this picture the other day daitheplant, which is quite helpful. From Left to Right 1) Planter 2) Tuber (see example from Moonlight) 3) Plagiar 4) Haulm

What about the kettledrum in the background then?

Well spotted daitheplant. At first I thought that was a Spathe , but then I noticed it only has two legs, making it an early-period Balancing Calcifuge.

Nice to see a photo of you all in your younger days Roofy, Dianthus on planter with her compost sieve hanging from her belt, Moonlight wrestling with her tuber, Dai with his plagiar & you twiddling on the haulm with your onion sets strapped to your leg!

Sue, you are getting as daft as Roofus. Roofus, you are right about the Balancing Calcifuge. My mistake was thinking it had 3 legs.

Well, a bit of a hiatus in the Onion journal. Not much has happened, to be honest. Some seeds germinated and became seedlings. Most of my energies have been taken up re-arranging the Polytunnel
| Against all the odds, some of my Kelsae seeds germinated. I've transplanted them into mid-sized pots, covered with a layer of vermiculite. (apparently this is good for them ?). The seedlings are so tiny you can barely see them in the picture (even if you click for a larger version), but they ARE there. The tray they are in has a heater wire which is supposed to be set at around 7 degrees centigrade, as recommended in Holy Scripture(1).
I'm only growing these for the Gelding Show, rather than the Kitchen, so I only need 3. With 15 seedlings growing, hopefully 3 will make it through to Onionhood ?
|
| Also on the heated bed, these are around 60 F1 Toughball seedlings (as recommended by markb for an early crop). It may seem a bit odd to have them in small seed pots like this, but I need them to be easily "transportable", as these are destined for both my Parents and Sisters gardens. (they have loaned me some bedding space, as the roofgarden is clearly not going to be NEARLY big enough for this project).
Lurking in the background (just in front of the Kelsae's) are 12 pots of Garlic. Hopefully.
|
| On the right: the last of my F1 Toughball seeds (around 25). the left-hand tray - along with several other smaller gravel trays - will have Ailsa Craig's... but I've run out of seedling compost, so that may have to wait for the weekend.
|
The new polytunnel layout is working well for Onionhood. I'll take more photographs on the weekend, after I have planted the 'Craig's Notes: (1) (D G Hesseyan, The Greenhouse Expert, Chapter 2, Verses IV-VIII).

It's kind of you to say that grindle, but its not a patch on some of the other members layouts. Check out the photographs of one of daitheplant's small mini-greenhouse . Now THATS the sort of packing density I would love to aspire to. Mind you.. he has several OTHER greenhouse/polytunnels to store all his tools, equipment, potcheen stills etcetera in ...
