I always aspire to the professionals and never match up to them, but what you are achieving is great way and above what I've ever done

You are too kind grindle. What I do is nothing special though... it's just a series of tiny steps over several years. And most of it is flagrently stolen from inspired by the other members here. ... and it's all just ground to a halt. Wilko's won't be displaying their Potting Compost untill Friday !! How am I supposed to Pot if I don't have any Potting Compost ? It's A Potting Plot, that's what it is ! Oh well, the Ailsa Craig's will have to wait until the weekend. Grrr........

Multi purpose compost will do just as well Roofus.

Truly ?
So the "official" potting compost is.. well.. a bit of a con ? (well, maybe thats a bit harsh; a 'marketing' exercise perhaps ? )

Not so much a con, but a way of making more money. As for multi purpose compost,it is called multi purpose because it can be used for seed sowing, cutting taking, potting on, potting up and growing things on.

Well, not a HUGE amount to report. Most of the last weeks effort has been more work on the polytunnel, plus setting up some more seed trays in readyness. (see the Main Blog ). I'm a TAD worried about my existing onion seedlings.. especially the Kelsae's. Despite the soil-warming wire, they don't appear to be actually GROWING. Mind you, on the other hand, they aren't showing any sign of dying either; the shoots still seem strong and vertical. Non of them are drooping or anything. They just don't seem to be growing - or even unhooking. Mind you.. it IS January, and the light levels are low. Hmm... I MIGHT re-install the growing light, just to see if it makes a difference. Or perhaps I'm just worrying too much, and I should leave them to it ? ***edit*** It occurs to me; they have all been repotted over Christmas... perhaps the roots are just "bedding in" to their new environment, prior to putting energy into growing the cotylodon ?

Roofus, Roofus, Roofus. Haven`t you learnt yet that the first rule of gardening is PATIENCE.

Meh... to quote Freddy Mercury... "I want it all.. and I want it Now" Still, it's been a very productive weekend in the Polytunnel. I've sowed around 100 Ailsa Craigs and 80 Bedfordshire Champions into potting trays. Which is a shame, because I was SUPPOSED to plant Brunton Showstoppers, not Bedfordshire Champions... but that will have to wait untill I have some more seed trays. (and compost, for that matter). NEXT weekend, perhaps ? daitheplant made a comment about clingfilm in the New Allotment thread, which set me thinking. I have a very vague memory of "sealing" my seed trays with clingfilm to help the seeds germinate. This was WAY back in the early days, and I can't even remember what I was germinating. It's a technique I had forgotten about for the last couple-or-so years, so I've decided to reinstate it. Mind you.. the clingfilm was very old and brittle; I may have to hunt around for some slightly thicker stuff. Anyway, here is a picture of them. Even if it doesn't help germinate the seeds, it DOES keep the Owls amused, as they use them as trampolines !! Two of my garlic bulbs have sprung into life, and poked little Monocots out of the soil. (is that the right word ? ). This has pleased me greatly !

I reckon at this rate you're going to need another polytunnel roofy

ROFL... that boat has already sailed grindle. I would LOVE another polytunnel. The fact of the matter is that there is nowhere to put one. Or rather... the spaces where it MIGHT go are either unsuitable (surface water), or counter-productive (they would block the sun to my main standing array). What I REALLY need is a PolyTardis. Not only is it bigger on the inside, it is also drier and warmer !

I reckon you better put your thinking cap on re the standing water, raise up the level with pallets or some such cobbled together boardwalk (not the song) A poly tardis sounds just the thing, maybe you could summon the Who man and get him to find you one

The pooling water would still "feed" condensation.
