How did a quiz work ? Did you use a chat room or Skype or something ?

We used the chat room of the forum but last time I checked it wasn't working. Most of us had different names but it didn't take a genius to figure out who was who It was a Thursday evening, my spag bols night so often got spilled food all down me trying to type and twirl spaghetti at the same time.

We could maybe start it up again. Louise was really good at setting up the questions. Geranium, you should get louise to come back and be our quiz mistress I have tried, Rosie, but she just doesn't want to.

I used to frequent a chat system called Lycos/Worlds Biggest Chat.
One of the rooms was the "Quiz Room". Anyone could pop in and announce a Quiz (called a quick-fire quiz). Alternatively, you could 'book' one in advance.
Usually one person would be the quizmaster, and set the questions, and announce who was correct for each question. A second person would be the Scorer, and keep track of the score.
There could be dozens of people in the quiz, and the pace could be frenetic, so it was difficult for one person to do both jobs. When I was quizmaster, I would have an excel spreadsheet of questions lined up, along with "stock" announcements ("Well done <insertname>, that was the correct answer", and so forth.) I'd be frantically copy/pasting the questions and stock answers, and I STILL struggled to keep up. (it could be a question, plus answer confirmation, every 5 seconds or so).
On once occasion we had Quiz Room Regulars vs The Guild of Moderators plus the System Managers. There where over a two hundred people in the room, and the UK server crashed ! The SM's had to keep re-setting it. Eventually the changed the load-balancing on the European servers to give the UK Quiz Room a higher priority, and the entire European Chat system came tumbling down.
In the end, they could only sustain the quiz by shutting down the East European servers alltogether, along with a reserve one from the USA, and re-allocating them exclusively to the Quiz Room (itself only ONE of about 1500 rooms on the UK server).
Happy days !
If we can agree a chat/skype room, I would be DELIGHTED to act as quizmaster, providing somebody else will do the scoring for me ?
Alternatively, I can have a stab at BOTH, but there may be a longer gap between questions.
Just let me know your thoughts ?

Sounds good Roofie, but I like prizes because I am basically greedy.

Well then Sweetpea, lets break the mold. I'd be happy to organise a quiz.. if only on an experimental basis. I'm experienced at it... within my previous environment (worlds biggest chat) Give me an environment, and I'll give you a Quiz. Better still.. I'll give you a methodology such that ANY of you can run a quiz. If Esther and SteveN are still around, I'm happy to be a contestant in THEIR quizes. Are they still available ? Are we serious about this, or is it just reminiscing for its own sake ? Are we up for this, or are we just wallowing in nostalgia ? There is a word for that. It beings in "M", and ends in "ation". Cherry, we can have a prize. It will be a certificate that I (or anybody) can create in Photoshop, and which could be posted in a new thread... the Gardeners Friends quiz thread. And if you don't want ME to organise it.. then somebody step up,and I will happily support them. What say you ? Shall we actually DO it ? Or are we just going to run back to our greenhouses, and play with our tubers ?

I think you'd have plenty of time in between questions here Roofy as there'd probably only about half a dozen/dozen competitors taking part & I can only type with 2 fingers so I'd never get anything right in time! I usually only come on here when I'm sitting down 'half-watching' something on TV as well so wouldn't be able to concentrate on a quiz. Your old quiz sounds like a plot for world domination in disguise, quietly shutting down Eastern European & U.S. servers one by one!

when somebody said our old quiz descended into mayhem, they were right and tbh we didn't take it too seriously. As for myself I don't mind taking part but my PC maywill let me down as it is constantly freezing up and not responding to anything even task manager at times. took me about 4 hours off and on just to post a pic earlier. Will have to get it sorted finances permitting.

Where has the chat room gone, anyway? Unless people sent a pm to the Quizmaster, I can't see how it would work???

I've never used it but doesn't that 'Shoutbox' function at the bottom of the forum page act as some form of chat room?

Yes it can be extended, but it was misused at one time so it is only just hanging on.
We would need to be sure that enough people want the quiz. Where would the prizes come from?
