I potted on 27 Dahlia Bishops Children and 53 Dahlia Bambino I've managed to start from seed on the windowsills. I have never grown these from seed so I got them as part of my 50% off Mr Fothergills order for Christmas. You can never have too many dahlias

Went to an interesting Dahlia talk in Bolton last night by Jack Gott. This bloke lives and breathes Dahlias! Got to see many of his 350 Dahlias, Collerettes, Anemone and water lillys. He has his own very successful way of doing things, was an eyeopener for me for deffo. This is how I understand it He starts his tubers off in the dark in a heated space, they only get light when he's in there when he's working on them. First shoots are cut off, the following 2 or 4 that emerge he pushes off with his thumb and they then get rooted in pure white sand, seemed to form excellent root systems. He also grows some plants as close as 9 inches apart. Clearly there's a lot of different approaches to propagation, simpler the better for me, as long as I've got 100 plants ready for June.

I Got my tubers set out finally last weekend. More than I expected with my new tubers. 60 in all but some of last years I'll only grow a few of each just to keep the stock going. Got rid of some poor performers but still have 20 varieties. Now they just need to wake up and give me some cuttings mid April to early may. Heres a few pics, I have them in a polythene tent inside the greenhouse with a small propane light. I have it inside an ally cowling to spread the heat.
Guess whats in the boxes
Tubers not looking too bad, just a few rotted away.
A quick dip in some warm water
Tubers good to go, Clover compo was a bit on the wet side
New ones
Low tec heating!
Ok I take a flask to my plot! I may be grumpy occasionally but not old just yet .....

Roxy wants a double stop it tends to be big but double stopped its OK, take very little off it disbud only the top wing buds when colour is in the terminal bud then remove the wing buds then so they don't get in the way. It will take all the weather its a hard petal so no need to cover. David Spencer won both the Miniature Championships at Wisley and Harrogate with Roxy in his entry. It is a class act but it has to be grown.

Hi Guys, due to health problems I am rather late in boxing up my tubers. However I need some advice please with regard to watering. I have mushroom boxes with a sheet of newspaper in the bottom, I add a couple of inches of multi purpose compost. Place the tubers and then compost on top, not covering the crown.
I have read that I should not water until growth appears. However I find that within a day the compost is drying out.
I do have the boxes in a shaded greenhouse but currently over the last few days we do have quite a lot of sunshine.
Would appreciate some help and advice.
Simon

Hi Simon, I tend to water my tubers quite well just try and keep the moisture away from the crown and you will be fine and once they are up and running keep them watered and the cuttngs will come thick and fast.
