Those are really good photos alan0747 lovely place to sit and drink a cuppa and watch the world go by - no need to leave when it's raining - I would install a bed settee, so I could stay if I were to tired to go home

I have had nearly hundred per cent success rate with my cuttings so far, only losing a few to a slug.
A couple I am struggling to make up numbers. To make up the numbers I am thinking of splitting some tubers, planting maybe beginning of May? what is the best way to treat split tubers?,
Should I restrict the stems as they appear through the ground and if so how many?
Will they be more vigorous than cuttings?
What will the quality of the flowers be?

Split tubers are ok split them down as much as you can leaving a shoot on each piece or an eye on each piece these can then be planted, they will produce early blooms. Restricting the shoots all depends on the variety I would suggest giant, Large, Mediums and smalls are better managed from a single shoot so if there are more than one shoot on each then I would just allow one this Is of course if you are wanting full size blooms. If you are not bothered and they are just for display purposes and garden use then allow more to develop. Often for miniatures and poms split tubers are used and can be easily grown this way for showing and again tend to produce earlier blooms. In general if you do not restrict the shoots then the blooms will be smaller.

Have you thown it all in the bin? It might be worth giving the piece that hasn't any signs of life a long soak in a bucket / container (rather than a watering can). That's what I've been doing and the eyes are popping out.

Sorry to hear about wyns Cat. My own plants are behind and look thin small cuttings in comparison to those I saw at the plant sale. Rooted plenty just not the quality I want. Unless I can get a proper greenhouse I guess I have to grow from split tuber. They are not getting enough light. Can't keep asking people for stock or buying it.

Well that's it, all the ground now prepared, Q4 hoed in and slug pellets down. Covers going back on this morning, next week the frame for the covers, and the big plant out on the 3rd and 4th of June. After winning the novices at the National last year, going to give the Intermediate championship class, a good crack. You never know, lightening might strike twice........
