The thing I find with slug pellets is, once you've had a heavy downpour, and we've had loads lately, they tend to get washed away and diluted. As I grow through Mypex, I find this happens a lot, I re-apply pellets every three or four days, this seems to keep the slimey creatures away from my dahlias. And touch wood, none of my plants have seen any action so far. I brought a 15kg bag of pellets two years ago, so I'm into my third year of using it. This year after I've clear the plot and rotovated, I'll chuck another load down, then put the covers on for winter, because, as the mild weather we had last winter, I found plenty of slugs quite happy living under the covers when they came up in spring!!

Hi JD yes I am with you, slug pellets applied a couple of months before planting then pellets under the mypex before planting then regular applications when ever.
jD hope your plants are good.

How you doing Master. My troupe are coming along lovely. Had to do the usual bud removal, you always get some who don't follow the script . Going to start the second stops for the double stoppers tomorrow and give them a good watering. Finally got rid of all the early mildew on some of the plants, plus they had a good spray with Decis protect last weekend, this Sundays spray is SB plant invigorator.
Covers arrived yesterday, 9m X 12m, 800g, 200um diffused, for £112, from Robinsons polytunnels, based in your neck of the woods.....well Lancashire anyway!!!
Trust your babies are doing well, and the cold snap last night didn't cause to much trouble.
Not long to the show season now, good luck to everybody showing, just remember to enjoy yourselves.

Hi David, I buy Decis protect from LBS, 1 litre for £26 plus VAT. I use it at 1.5ml per 1lt of water. And yes, it's fantastic stuff, the only insecticide I know that kills earwigs. It doesn't protect against red spider mite, for that I use Majastic. Throughout the growing season I use four different sprays every week, three insecticides and a fungal. That way the plants get all the protects they need, and the little blighters don't get used to anyone spray. Hope that helps. £12 for 30ml seems a bit extreme.

Thanks for info JD, your blackfly don't stand a chance! 4 sprayings a week! I'll have a look at LBS, sounds about 12 times cheaper. 1 litre would last me a long time with only 80ish plants. Just need some sunshine now to get my late planted Dahlias motoring.

Hi David, You asked if you drench the plants. don't drench the plants with the decis spray just an over and under spray over the top of the plants and in between the leaves will be fine, don't forget to spray the under surface of the leaves. I usually put in a little folia feed in the mix. Good luck for the season David

I use decis protech @davidv good stuff as johndoe says and it kills earwigs but do not use in a combined spray with another insectide/fungicide unless on the list for compatibility. I did a combined dip this year not reading properly and plants been hit as one can cancel out the other. I now spray seperately. Once every 10days in rotation. I also use majestik and dynamec which are different modes of action highly effective on spider mites and thrips. As my fourth I use normal ultimate bug killer. For fungal I have amistar and systhane 20ew . Plants this year getting away from me knocmback required and a lot of debranching. Never had such big plants this early . Don't think it will be a good season for me in terms of timing but not stressing still learning.

And as Ian says you must do under the leaves. As a rough guide, I use 15lts, which does 200 plants.

I'm with you now JD, crystal clear, all is copacetic...... Thanks Ian and Raymond for input. I'll be trying Decis for sure. The alternate weeks with a different spray makes sense to confuse the little critters. I did weeks about with provado/Bug clear/systhane last year, still had capsid bugs which it didn't touch. Good luck to all at the shows.

Same to you @davidv and all the members on the forum have a great season.
I finished planting the allotment on Thursday should have been done at least 3/4 weeks earlier but didn't get it until the 22nd of May and had a lot of clearing to do plus the main focus on the plants in the garden . A lot of work ahead of me this winter.
What I did get in earlier is moving rather nicely especially the candys and Ruskin avenger also greenways zoe. As the plot is open and full sun noticing the stems are much thicker and sturdier than in the garden I have been knocking out buds already .
All in all got in 130 plants
Let's see what the ground is capable of and my own feeble skills as a grower! Haha hey ho on we go.

Had Most of the Dahlias in the ground for a couple of weeks now, for some reason it seems that Eastwood Moonlight is particularly appealing to slugs this year ! Most of the plants have been hardly eaten but Eastwood Moonlight is taking a hammering this year ! I've never seen this before. Its funny how some verities of dahlia attract pests , growing kiwis on my plot a few years ago I had wasps either feeding or taking bits off the base of the plants because they thick and woody. Back to their nest maybe to make paper I don't no , so I moved kiwis to a green house , I had 10 different verities of dahlia in there and kiwis got infested with white fly no matter what I sprayed with could not get rid sprayed every three days , all other dahlias where as clean as a whistle , when I got to the shows with them I had Ian saying hey Ste your kiwis are crap , problem solved season after smoke bombed green house R I P white fly , on the plot I used ant powder at the base and it worked but had to keep repeating it .

Some of the pot tubers are now in bloom. Favourite one so far is Robs Symbol, medium semi cactus. It's looking more orangey than it did last year, which I quite like. Not long now for the first show, the Midlands at Kenilworth on the 27th, for me. Looking forward to meeting up with Ian, Steve B and everyone else who shows there. Good luck to all taking part.
