Trouble at t'PolyMill !
The Owls are on Strike ! No work is getting done !! AAARGH... now they're Picketing the Polytunnel !!
Apparently they're not happy about the weather. They are complaining that its too cold in the Polytunnel, and it's contravening the factory act !
I DID suggest they stand on the heater wires, but they say that their heads and tummies are still cold I phoned my Sister up to see if she had any idea's... she thought for a bit, and asked for the Owls measurements. .. two days later....
SORTED !!!! (you can click the pictures to see a larger version).

ladybird , we are all in it together; for without our comments, Roofy would not be posting the life and times of the gardening owls.
I think this makes the roofgardener blog one of the most read in the forum.... it has almost become the picnic blog that we all have to check out each day. Not a lot makes me laugh out loud, when I'm on my own, but Roofy's trials and tribulations and sometimes wacky solutions, are a wonderful anecdote to the duller days of life.
Thanks Roofy

Roofus, I take it you and your sister are still in therapy? Though, I must say, it made me smile. Or that could have been wind.

Aww Roofy, tell your sister I think she's lovely! The owls look really cosy in their new outfits! They will have to take their hats off though when the sun's out or they won't be able to see in the dark (solar eyes!)

Stuff
Well, there's been a BIT of progress this week, now that the Owls have called off their industrial action. It was also a VERY interesting weekend, with a visit from Miss M for tea and cakes, and some extraordinary revelations. (and some useful gardening tips). (click to see a bigger version of the pictures).
| I've made a bunch of little laminated labels, and glued them to wooden sticks. The main seeding hasn't even started yet, but already I'm losing track.
Hopefully these will last a long time, and I can re-use them.
The view here is of the heated 'germinating' bench, with White Owl supervising.
|
| This is the "planting" bench. The trays are all filled with compost and watered ready for putting the actual seeds in, and then they are moved over to the 'germinating' bench.
Brown Owl is checking a set of KC's "mystery" seeds.
|
| A close-up of one of KC's mystery seed packets
|
| Some of the re-potted Ailsa Craig seedlings. There are about 25 of these scattered around, some in the Growhouse, and some in the Overflow Greenhouse.Originally, I was just going to grow a handful for show purposes, but they seem to be quite enthusiastic, so I may grow a bunch more.
|
| Two trays of Bruntons Showstoppers.
.. umm... or possibly Bedford Champions.
OWLS.... where are the labels ?
|
| All of my passive propagator trays are suffering from mould... plus... stuff just ISN'T germinating. Miss M suggested that I remove the lids, so I have done that. daitheplant... you warned me earlier in this diary about lids causing problems (condensation ? ). What are YOUR thoughts on this ?
I've never had this problem before... stuff just not germinating. But then it occured to me; in past years I've not started planting until April, or even May. (through disorganisaton). So perhaps I'm just doing everything TOO early, despite what the labels on the packets say ?
|
Well, thats it for the moment. Not a HUGE amount of proper "gardening" getting done, just a lot of faffing around, but I think it will bear fruits. Or at least... vegetables. And now for the revelation ! I was chatting with Miss M (a local neighbour), who is a keen gardener. She drops hints that she has a circle of gardening friends (she refers to them as "the gardeners", but I've never pressed her for details). And then she dropped a bombshell. We where trying to remember which plants might be "companions" for carrots, so I reached out for my copy of Hessayon's "Vegetable Expert" book. I couldn't find anything, and Miss M casually asked if I could pass over "David's" book for HER to check. I assumed she was being humorous, and gently mocked her for being "on first name terms" with Doctor D G Hessayan", to which she responded... "Well, I AM. I've got all his books, but they are signed copies"
