I've been away from the forum for a while.... the dark evenings have kinda dampened my ardour for gardening, as has the fact that everything is dying. (or at least, going into hibernation). Still, incredibly, the harvesting is still going on ! Here is the main Roofgarden Chilli Harvest. This is from just two plants, and AFTER about 20 have already been removed for various nefarious purposes !! I am EXCEEDINGLY happy with this ! Many are still green (or dark purple), but now that I've brought them into the warmth, I'm hoping they will ripen. Mind you, even as green/purple, they are tasty and hot ! I must dig out the seed packet and find out what they are. I have never grown this variety before; my previous chilli's where all the traditional "long thin" ones. But I will DEFINATELY want to grow some more of these in 2017. daitheplant... I havn't forgetten about "coming to take me away"....

the dark purple ones are ripe, Roofy. Only green ones are unripe
They look like banana chillies, but don't know the varietal name.

I thought that as well dianthus. Only thing is... as best I can remember... the purple ones actually GREW as purple. (and then eventually start to change colour). Hopefully I'll be able to dig up the seed packet that they came from ! Having said that, I THOUGHT both plants came from the same packet, but one grew purple, and the other one green. (and then BOTH changed colour). Most strange !

They are a little like Belgian Carrot, which was great for my cooking, because I always knew how many I needed.

Well, my computer died again shortly after writing my previous post... but I've now got a NEW one, courtesy of my employer. ('cos I sometimes work from home). Meanwhile.... a little song for the end of 2016. With apologies to Fiddler On The Roof. Is this the little seed I planted ? When did it get to grow so long ? (I don't remember sowing Bindweed ?? Where's it from ? ) When did they get to be a beauty? When did they grow to be so tall? Wasn't it yesterday when they were small? Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset, Swiftly flow the days, Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers, Blossoming even as they gaze... Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset! Swiftly flies the year, One season following another, Laden with happiness and tears... What sort of plantfood should I give them ? How can I help to ease their way ? Now they must reach towards the sunlight, Day by day. They look so natural together. Just like companion plants should be. Is there a potting shed in store for me? Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset, Swiftly flow the days, Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers, Blossoming even as they gaze...

Farewell to 2016
And what a great year it was ! The polytunnel didn't blow away, and I learned LOTS. But what worked, and what didn't ? Vegetables
The onions, garlic and spudlinks where great; I'll definately be doing those again. The courgettes, runner beans and carrots where a bit of a failure, so some thinking required there. I was VERY pleased with the chilli's and Capsicums; they are going on the priority list ! Erbs The Sage and Coriander where a suprise; I really liked them, and they will DEFINATELY be on the list for 2017. The Basil and Oregano where... well... OK-ish, but I need to work on them. Salad stuff I was really impressed by the Rhocket, and the Little Gem lettuce. Tomatoes where good, aleit very late in the season. Flowers The star of the show was without doubt KC's Allysium and Night Scented Stock. Another suprise was the Blue Echium. All of these are going to feature heavily in 2017. The generic 'polinator attractor' mixed seeds from Wilko's where nice... but I probably won't bother with them in 2017, and focus on specific flowers instead. The Geraniums didn't really DO anything, but perhaps they only flower after the first year or something ? Oh, and I appear to have picked up a Foxglove from somewhere. I'll update the Onions in the Onion Blog. The multiple computer failures dampened my Posting ardour towards the end of the year, and the Eye Infection and Sciatica knocked me back shortly after Christmas. It's getting better, but my leg still aches a bit, which makes it kinda difficult to concentrate... hence the rather boring nature of this post Apparantly some other stuff happened in 2016. Something to do with a European Onion, and the new President of the USA is a Dhalia, or a Dianthus, or something beginning with 'D' anyway ? But thats just background noise. And thats it for 2016. Here's to 2017. I'll be starting the 2017 diary shortly; Could one of the moderators lock this blog after a couple of days please ?
