Miffed about Marjoram. Sooo... I'm been trying to grow Marjoram and Oregano (not sure what the difference is, but the seeds came in different packets ). All of the Oregano, and all but ONE of the Marjoram failed. Or possibly vica-versa. The surviving plant is part of the "Im The Boss's Farm" selection. I have lots of pots optimistically labelled "Marjoram" and "Oregano"... all full of bare soil and a total absence of plant. Well, this sort of thing can happen. It's all part of the rich tapestry of gardening. Except...... Whilst browsing around the Roofgarden with Miss M last weekend, we noticed some "weeds" growing out of a container that had previously held onions. They had sprouted up since the onions where harvested several weeks ago. On a whim, I rubbed one of the leaves and smelt it. Guess what ? Yup. Marjoram. Or possibly oregano. So then we retired to the Annexe en-route to the polytunnel, and I noticed a similar-looking "weed" growing out of a trough previously containing some Garlic plants. Guess what ? Yup... MORE marjoregano. HOW ? How in the name of Loki's Lingerie Locker could marjoram seeds have flown such long distances from the Polytunnel ? (the only place that I knowingly store them). I don't think I've grown Marjoram before, so it seems unlikely that last years seeds could have been in the (re-used) compost.. and if they HAD... why did they wait so long to sprout up ? It's a conspiracy to vex and perplex the Working Roofgardener. I suspect CIA involvement ! BAH ! Mind you... I'm actually DELIGHTED, as it now means that I have THREE containers of perennial Marjoram. Or possibly Oregano !

It must have been 'Marjorie the Marjoregano Fairy' then Roofy! The only thing I can think of is if perhaps when you sowed the seeds in the pots you pressed the seeds down with your fingers & maybe some of the seeds stuck to your hands or gloves which you then transferred to the pots outside when you touched or moved them? It's a mystery but at least you might get some nice herbs out of it!

Indeed SueA... but... I still don't understand why they didn't show up at once ? Ah well.... the mysteries of gardening. And... as you say... I DO now have some nice marjoram plants. Or possibly oregano ?

ChilliTastrophe
Well, I know we are supposed to be philosophical about Gardening Failures, but this one upset me a bit. Consider my two main chilli plants. (click pictures to enlarge). | Behold the Chilli's. Don't they look nice in their little dedicated greenhouse ?
| | These are the GREEN chilli's... although many are turning red since this photo was taken last week. Don't they look PLUMP and scrumptious ?
| | And these are the PURPLE/BLACK chillis. (though, likewise, they are also turning red). Don't they look mysterious and fiery ?
|
So two weeks ago, I plucked a couple, and tentatively nibbled the ends, to see what they where like. I took precautions first... I had a glass of water, ice, and a fire-blanket all ready to hand. But.... They where not necessary. Neither chilli's had any flavour AT ALL, let alone heat. I don't mean they where mild.. I mean... they where totally without flavour. Well, actually, they tasted a bit like grass !. I can only assume that by allowing so many flowers to become fruits, in such small pots, that all the energy of the plants went into producing the basic fruits, with nothing left over to produce the chemical that makes them 'hot'. So my entire 2016 crop - far from being a record-breaker - is actually a TOTAL failure !
I mentioned this to a colleague at work, who pointed out that the 'heat' in a chilli comes from the seeds, not from the flesh at the tip of the fruit, and that I should try nibbling a bit further up. So I did. And my mouth went... The Chilli's Live !!
I've got a decent crop after all. I was (and still am) SO happy about this

Sorry it took so long Roofus. The reason why I wanted "They`re Coming To Take Me Away. Featuring your fanclub. View My Video Well, I must apologise for the long delay daitheplant. And also to all those patiently awaiting Pt2 of the Polytunnel video, and - of course - the Owls. I've had some difficulty with my computer over the last couple of weeks, which has gradually been getting worse and worse. It appears that a recent Windows 7 update (I thought product support had finished ? ) has now caused my Windows Update program to start hogging 50% of my CPU, and a LOT of my hard-disk access buffers. The upshot of this is that I can't currently edit video's ! I'm hoping to use a system restore to rectify the problem BEFORE the weekend... I'll keep you appraised of progress.
