@davidv could you tell me the name of the dahlia in your avatar please? Hello Daisy, it's 'Ruskin Myra'. A small semi cactus Dahlia, one of my many favourite Dahlias. It's just such nice colours. Thank you! @davidv

I really WILL get to look at your video this weekend thecrackedpotgardener ... my broadband at home is down at the moment, and its awkward to watch a video (with sound) at work (open plan office). daitheplant - I was thinking of 2 litre (or larger) drinks bottles (e.g. lemonade etc) with the top bit sawn off. That would make them around 8"-10" deep, which is deeper than the growing box I used LAST season. (and my carrots where only around 4" long at most). Roofus, may I suggest you cut the BOTTOM off the bottles, turn them upside down, then you have drainage.

True daitheplant, but then they would fall over ! My thinking was to cut holes in the bottom of the bottles and put around 0.5" depth of pea gravel in to help drainage. That way they could be free-standing ?

EGADS !!! Fame and fortune. Whatever you do, don't tell the Owls about it ... they are publicity fiends, and would try and get into your videos. Camera hogs ! They'd go to the opening of an envelope ! I'm hoping to exhibit at this years Gedling Show (probably in the Novice class, but we shall see...). I've never done this before, nor tried to grow "show grade" vegetables, so I will be watching your videos with great interest !

That way they could be free-standing ? If you are using pea gravel, you can just as well place the bottles neck down in a layer of it, thus giving you a greater depth of container.

If you're selling 'grow your own giant pumpkin' sets thecrackedpotgardener then you presumably must have grown them before & know what you're doing so you should be well on your way to success at the show! You said you're too late for onions but you could try growing show onions from plants if that's allowed , I think Mr. Fothergills/Marshalls/Unwins have been advertising that they have got some Kelsae show onion starter plants available, they didn't have seeds because of a crop failure this year. The only thing with your video I would suggest is maybe put your compost/water/trays etc. a bit closer to where your camera is so you don't have to disappear from shot for ages & the background sounds are very loud, brushing up seeds etc. so maybe you can move your camera/mike a bit further away - I know nothing about filming though so it's just an observation. onions from sets is all it says but its ok plenty of other classes to enter lol i have grown pumpkins before but i had a plot then now just a small garden so not sure how well this will work i may have to rethink the classes to enter i do want to get some good dahlia tubas though so i can may be get them up to standard for a show no idea what ones though not sure about the background noise as it plays fine in the editor ill look into it i have moved the compost now lol Hiya Crack Pot' re. tubers for dahlias, I don't think that the tuber or rooted cuttings make that much of a difference, unless you are exhibiting at the National Dahlia or Harrogate Society shows which are the top level shows. I've entered both my local town show and county show with dahlias from both tubers and rooted cuttings.
What sort of show is it that you are aiming for?

Fair comment Moonlight, I used to grow from divided tubers. The trouble is you get multiple stems coming out of the ground, ideal for a garden display but not great for show blooms. I cheated a bit here, if there were 3or 4 stems coming through the ground, I'd choose the strongest 1 to keep and snip the others off as low as poss. Then treat the single remaining stem same as a rooted cutting, stopping it at 5 pairs of leaves and so on. I'd grow cuttings as a preference now though, they have more vigour and it's totally fresh new vegetation you're growing, not last years.
