Thank you all - Widget will have to learn about gardens, won't he! I remember when grindle first had Dylan that he dug... My friend has given us a cage so he'll be safe when we bring him home tomorrow - it's a long journey.

Sounds a bit like OH to me, grindle . I do hope Widget learns not to dig up my plants. Spaniels are eager to please, so the clicker/reward system should work well with him. We made the mistake of spending the summer we had our Jack Russell pup, at the sands and she learn how to dig as we were using spades and buckets making sandcastles. She used to bring dad's small fish catches back up the beach, for mum to pack away. It taught her how to hide her chews, which she then guarded and she became overly territorial and beta female in the house. If we took her out for a walk, she would guard us from harm, for hours on end, but indoors, she was a nightmare for us daughters. I now know it was mum's fault, that she wasn't placed in the correct pecking order, and we were subjected to her moodiness and more than a few nips!

OH heck dianthus that sounds a bit scary Could have been worse. As teens, we could read her moods rather well, so didn't get nipped so often. Also, we were getting bigger, so she became less inclined to pick a fight. We couldn't fetch mum's cardigan for her, as it was usually being protected.

I've been reading the excellent advice on the Kennel Club site, and my friend has lent me a book on training Cocker Spaniels. I know they are very intelligent dogs, so I hope he'll be a quick learner. We're off to pick him up today!

Let's see if tinypic is playing today. He's very small, lively and very inquisitive. I was very pleased with his progress when he learned the 'come' command after we got home. He seems to know his name, too.
