Raymond as mentioned you don't need a photo sharing app any more just click the add photos link top right and select your photos from your device - dead easy, che can do it I have been asked since returning from Wisley to become promotion and press secretary for my local village show. I was told they wanted me for show secretary as the committee is getting older but we will start with this newly formed position to see if we can rekick start the shows exhibitor numbers then go from there. I think I will start by contacting the other local parish councils and seeing if they are aware of any other local shows. HOW DO YOU ALL FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR LOCAL SHOWS?? word of mouth? any ideas greatly appreciated to keep the dahlia at these events. Like Raymond we have started thinking about next year. We don't plan on specialising yet but we will donate to school anything we will not be using as ive mentioned. Some classifications we have 4 or 5 varieties and others just one or none so we are going to fine tune to cover the classes we like. Well thats the thought process for next weekend when we go around the plot check labels pre-digging and chat about what worked, what we liked, and what didnt make the grade!

That's great, Cat. Getting involved with your local show committee is really important if they are going to survive. The small local shows are dying on their feet around our area. But some societies don't want help or new blood, it's like they just want their own thiefdom, and others seem just to accept the end is nigh . Like our little Hertford show, which is the longest active show in Hertfordshire, 88 years of showing!! Sunday turned out to be the last show, as the secretary is 93, and the committee are all in their late eighties. Sadly two of the main suppliers of exhibits have decided to call it a day, so they've taken the decision to close the show. Such a shame .
Don't forget to let me know if there's any varieties you want for next year, as I'm going to be reducing the numbers of varieties from 18 to 9 or 10.
Right, time to get up the allotment, Harrogate awaits

Hi Cat, I am the show secretary of my local village horticultural society. A good starting point for finding out where your local shows are is to talk to judges. They have a wealth of knowledge. And book your judges early as many are or have retired. I have booked all my judges for 2018. Do you have a Guild of Horticultural Judges and Lecturers in your area. They publish a list of judges every 2 years and the list for my area Surrey is out now, but you have to be a member of the guild to obtain one. I think the cost is £10 per annum. If you need any further help please contact me. I wish you the best of luck. As johndoe says local shows are dying off.

Right, time to get up the allotment, Harrogate awaits Hi johndoe, I notice that you are reducing the varieties you will be growing next year. If you have any small, miniature or poms you wish to sell I would be most grateful. I will of course cover all costs incurred. Good luck at Harrogate. Many thanks.

Will do Diggie, should have a good selection of both small and miniature dec's, and ball's. Sorry, no poms as I don't grow them.

Had a great time at Harrogate, and despite the appalling weather leading up to the show, the blooms on view looked very healthy, although there were some gaps on the benches. Always good to meet up with everybody and have a good old dahlia chinwag . Even with my covers, the wind really took it's toll. Entered 5 classes and manage to salvage an entry in the Intermediate championship. Had 3 Hillcrest Candy, 5 Blyton Everest, and 6 Barbarry Primrose Hall to choose from, so was absolutely chuffed to bits to get the runners up spot and a bronze medal, to a great set of vases from Ian Thompson. Really made what had been a good weekend, great!!! Well done to all the people who organized the show, and the exhibitors who managed to get their blooms on the benches.
13 of the 14 blooms I managed to get to Harrogate, before judging
The lovely view at 6.30am on Friday morning
Well chuffed to find this after the judging was done!!
More lovely vases staged despite the weather
Steve Burns, the man with the Midas touch. Fantastic exhibit, and now the double champion of 2017. Well done mate and richly deserved, and cracking to have a beer, or two with you and Ian Friday night.

Congratulations johndoe you've had a great season. Fantastic photos too. A visit to Harrogate is on my list of things to do next year just to see these amazing dahlia s up close.

Well done Johndoe ! I was amazed at the exhibits this year, such lovely rich colours; there are some talented exhibitors out there!!
Halls of Heddon got the Premier Award again, and very well deserved too. The staging was amazing; lots of rich colours this year. Dave Hall told me they had 15 hours of solid rain before they picked the blooms; they had to pick early or not have an exhibit at all !
