Thanks everyone. It's been a wonderful season, cards at the National and Harrogate. My first society championship win, 3 silver medals, 2 bronze, 4 other trophies and shields, and many firsts, seconds and thirds. And like all us dahlia nuts, can't wait till next year . Cutting down has already begun, and variety planning is at an advance stage. Hope to stream down to 11 varieties, but it'll be hard as I like so many of the ones I already grow .
A big well done to you, Cat, for guiding Che in his love of dahlias, the young is a real credit to you and the OH. Look forward to seeing you both again next year, expect your set up is already on the move for 2018!!
JJ, if you can only do one show next year, please make it Harrogate. To my mind, it's the best show of the year. Lovely friendly people, and so well organized. One tip, if you do come, book your hotel early. Harrogate is the opposite to everywhere else. The prices go up, the nearer to the day!!
I agree 100% with you Lou, I expected to see bigger gaps on the benches, and the quality of the blooms was outstanding considering all the awful weather we all suffered in the days leading up to the show. I think in my short time of showing, this has been the worst year for weather I've experienced. Hopefully 2018 will be more accommodating for dahlia growing

johndoe we like you are planning on reducing the number of varieties but wont have Wisley to worry about. We are going to reduce our number of plants too by reducing the numbers of pot grown plants. We never really get them looking as good as we should due to laziness with watering so it's time to do less better rather than more halfheartedly. Che will be showing as an intermediate next season here at CDS shows but I can still show as novice with his leftovers. We are possibly going to try and do Yeovil show too. We had hoped to do Yeovil this year but the rain stopped play by second week of september and so Che decided he had enough. Perhaps next year we will hear of other shows within 100 miles of us, who knows! Let us know you final choices when your sorted it would be a great help to know what others around the country are growing.

Hi Cat, that was exactly the advice I was given when I first started showing. Do the numbers you can give the right amount of time too, and not the numbers you can't. It's a shame you cannot make Wisley next year, but should imagine it's difficult with the school. My best advice to you regarding local show is get a list of judges from local horticultural societies, as they are the ones who know all the local show dates and secretary's. Good luck with all your winter plans. Here's my provisional varieties for next year; Giant dec- Bryn Terfel, Sir Alf Ramsey. (Have ordered 4 plants of Aggie White though!!) Large dec- Westerton Lilian Small dec- Barbarry Rover, Blyton Everest, Winholme Diane Min Dec- Barbarry Primrose Hall Small Ball- Amy Cave, Barbarry Pixie, Rossendale Herp Min Ball- Jomanda, Barbarry Star Large semi-cactus- Kenora Challenger Medium semi-cactus- White Moonlight Small semi-cactus- Oakwood Goldcrest, Ryecroft Zoe. I've got a large outside area that I'll have some trial plants, hopefully, including my sport of Westerton Southside.

Hi johndoe, That's a fantastic sport of Westerton Southside. I prefer it to the original. I hope you have great success with it. Good luck.

Looks as though I have a blyton golden girl beginning to sport. The bloom has pure white petals around the centre.

In this week's "Garden News", our very own star of the future Che got a mention by Dave Gillam in his column, regarding his success at Wisley !

Had the great pleasure of meeting Cat, and the 'little champ' at Wisley. Despite it being a huge occasion, he took it all in he's very young stride, and was a real credit to his Mum and Dad. Hopefully the dahlia bug stays with him and he becomes a future Terry Clarke winner .
