Hi Lou, Sue and Johnjo, I spoke with Moonlights Dad a couple of evenings ago, He said he was very pleased that he has a few seedlings from the batch of seed Jane had sown, John grew them on and he says there are a few that look very very promising which I am pleased to hear. He will be sending me a few plants to grow so I feel really honored to be doing so, I know Jane would be thrilled. Jane's two girls are fine. Regards Ian

Thanks for the update ian , I was just thinking about Janey/ Moonlight the other day as her birthday came up on the forum calendar, lovely to hear that her seedlings are being carried on & the girls are doing O.K., she's missed a great deal on here, love to her family.

Hi everyone, I need some advice please. I'm meaning to grow Marston Suzanne this year and before I place my Halls of Heddon order I just wanted to confirm it doesn't need to be covered.
Also if I was going to have a go at at showing in a local show how many plants of it would I need to get a vase of three blooms ( assuming I got the timing correct)?
Can't wait to get started!!
Thanks
Johnjess

Hi JJ, happy new to you and hope all your tubers are okay. Never grown Suzanne, but know from others, it can take a bit of looking after. If you're only doing the one show, you could probably get away with 5 plants. One bloom per plant, and a couple of spares, at the time of cutting. The more blooms, the better the choice .

JJ Suzanne is a great variety it will grow without any fuss outside its not really affected by the weather but equally good under cover. Personally I think it is better without covers, you want to be growing plenty up on it. stop it in the pot the week before planting out or on planting better double stopped to maintain size (it can be big) it is one of the best miniatures like all reds occasionally it throws the odd streaky petal, that's easily dealt with. I would only give it a base dressing I tend not to feed miniatures at all give them a tonic of Epsom salts (for colour)you should be looking to grow 12-14 up. selection of buds? I allow all the buds to develop, initially preferring to allow the two side buds to develop and bending over the terminal bud this help to keep the two side buds under control. Even doing this the foot stalks are long enough do not disbud too far down the stem otherwise again the blooms can go over size. I have treated them in the past like a pompon just keep removing the growing tips of every lateral up to the second week in July then allow the buds to develop this will give plenty of breaks to bloom. on selection of your blooms to show, select blooms that are well under the ring as they do tend to grow I water. The blooms have great neat form as I say do not over feed and it will reward you well. It can be coarse and look to have big petals but only because people do not cultivate it and put down too much base feed to begin with. You can show it well off 6 plants. I have had best vase at Harrogate with it. Oh it can be a tall grower so 4 - 5' canes. Good luck

Thanks for the replies johndoe, and ian. I'm going to grow mainly miniature s and small s this year to have more flower numbers and try to and learn the basics and hopefully have more blooms to choose from if I do decide to have a go at showing.
Interesting that you don't feed miniature s ian apart from base dressing. Another note for my notebook!!
Thanks again
Johnjess
