Do the colours match the pages in your colourful filing system as well ladybird? Looks like a good idea so you can tell what's what at a glance but what do the colours stand for, type of plant, time of sowing etc.?

Do the colours match the pages in your colourful filing system as well ladybird? Looks like a good idea so you can tell what's what at a glance but what do the colours stand for, type of plant, time of sowing etc.? You`ll be sorry you asked Sue ,I did explain my "system" on here some time ago and I believe Sweetpea fell asleep As you know I keep an A4 file . An A-Z of all flower seeds and pages for tomatoes, veg, herbs and a diary ( I`ll post some pics ) . I sow seeds in 1/4 or 1/2 green seed trays and give each tray a number on a white sticker . I will be sowing 4-8 trays on any day over the next few months and each tray could have several different seed in it, so over time a lot of green trays accumulate and if I want to check on a particular seed it can take me ages to locate the tray as they can all look similar. As you know my labels are made from old venetian blinds and as they were nearly finished I tried to find different coloured ones on gumtree and freecycle but only managed to get dark blue ones. So I bought a pack of sharpies and coloured the tips of the labels, so the first trays will be orange , and the second lot of tays will have maybe pink ect. I keep a diary of everything I sow with a small drawing of a seed tray and write the seed names inside it so now I will add the sharpie colour to the tray and they will be easier to find . I`ll keep the red ones for toms and peppers and the dark green ones for veg and herbs. The dark blue labels I will use for out of date seeds.

I asked a few seed companies if I could use the pictures from their site to made laminated labels . These I use when I transplant seedling into the black seed trays or cell trays , I think it helps when there are 20 different varieties of petunias and they add a bit of colour of the Greenhouse. MG]

You're very well organised ladybird, I haven't the patience to keep such detailed records, I have had a couple of 'gardeners diaries' in the past which I've only ever filled in a few pages of & then given up. I remember seeing your files before & being amazed, the coloured labels will make it easier for you to spot what's what won't they. There is a seed company which used to send labels out with the pack of seeds, can't remember which one, but that made life easy as I usually find my pens have dried up when I come to use them although I did pick up a new Sharpie for 4p in the Co-op the other week off their clearance shelf!

It gives you something to look forward to though planning all your seed sowing doesn't it.

I do love sowing out of date seeds just to see of they are still viable. I have some free seeds of stocks from garden news 2009 that still germinated last year . I have just started decorating my pages for more interest and I`m going to try printing the shape of the trays and typing the names in to make it neater.

You number all of your plantpots ? Usually its seed trays Roofy I only sow in 1/4 or 1/2 green seed trays and I cram them with different seeds . The largest number of trays has been 94 back in 2011, thought I`ll be pricking some trays out while sowing new trays of seeds . I put a sticker on each tray with the number. when I prick them out into black seed trays , cell trays or pots I give them a letter.

Hmmm.. what do you mean by a "seed tray" ? What size are they ?
I tend to have lots of little 1" square plantpots that I think of as "seedling pots"... and I put THEM into gravel trays, which I THINK are seed trays but without the drainage holes ? The gravel trays are about the size of a piece of A4 paper, or thereabouts ?
