Actually I don't think cacti are more unwelcoming than roses. I've lost count of how many times my fingers have bled from being in contact with rose thorns, but it has never happened with a cactus … and I've been collecting them since 1965 I find them fascinating …

Flowers every year for the last few years so maybe the Welsh climate likes it.

It's an Echinopsis sweetpea and steve , but I don't know the species. There are lots of hybrids in cultivation too.

Gymnocalycium has no hairs or spines on the calyx. Gymno means naked and calycium comes from calyx.
