My new garden is TINY.. but.. at least it is MINE. I won't have the landlords supervising, so I can develop it as I see fit. I'm really looking forward to it as a 'project'. More to follow

Well, I've finished the move, and I'm utterly exhausted - but happy Question: when is the earliest I should plant grass seed ?

Well, I've finished the move, and I'm utterly exhausted - but happy Question: when is the earliest I should plant grass seed ? Glad you have the move over, it can be a daunting task. Will you have room for your polytunnel ? Looking forward to seeing your next video of your new garden

The worst is over now you've made the move Roofy, take your time, I'd wait until the soil has warmed up a little before sowing any grass seed, if you put it down too soon the birds are likely to swoop down & eat it all if nothing else is growing!

A New Beginning Well, here it is. My new 'garden', and doesn't it look a mess ? Straggly weed-infested grass. A few desultory bulbs in the south-end bed. And my plantpots scattered around Note: all the images are on RoofNet, so you can click them for a larger version of the picture. This allows you to REALLY appreciate the weeds ! | Looking north: my flat, plus the little 'path' running along its face. | | Looking vaguely east. This really highlights the straggly nature of the grass, and the feeble 'hedge'. Indeed, the 3-4' of depth nearest the 'hedge' is almost entirely weeds... | | Another eastern view. | | Southern end. This has quite a deep 'bed', but it is currently occupied by weeds and some bulbs | | All quiet on the Western Front |
So there you have it. A small, and completely rubbish, garden. Ahhh.. but Roofgardener has Plans. To be continued...

A New Beginning - the Plan Well, previously I bemoaned the terrible state of the garden. However... I have A Plan First we tackle the lawn, and using weed/feed and probably new grass seed, we bring it into a perfect state. Secondly, I dig SOME of the lawn up, and convert the eastern edge of it into a really big (deep) border. Perhaps 3 or 4 foot deep !
| Before | | With the lawn improved.... | | And with the big border ! I can grow BUNIONS and shallots and.. perhaps even some Brassica's ? Cabbages, cauliflowers, n' tha'. | | The North end before..... | | And the North end with some tomatoes and chilli potted plants ! It's a south-facing wall (sort of), so it will get plenty of sunshine. I can also reactivate my old "spud bin" concept from the old roofgarden. This pleases me greatly | | The West End before... | | The West End afterwards. It only has a narrow flower bed, and I may plant Welsh (perpetual) onions. |
I havn't decided what to do with the south bed.. perhaps decorative flowers ? Also.. there are about 4-5 brackets scattered around for hanging baskets, and I'll DEFINATELY utillise those to brighten everything up. So.. some spadework ahead of me.. but I'm really looking forwards to it !

Well, 2020 was rubbish. But I have high hopes for 2021 Moderators: could you move the 2021 posts (and any responses) from my 2020 thread into this one, and then lock the old thread ?

Moved the posts over Roofy, good luck with the new project, should look good, I like the wider border, no point to skinny little borders!

I think its a lovely garden roffy, seems very private. Will you have your poly tunnel up ? How did you do the redesigning in the after pics, its a great way to see potential, is it a software program ?

How did you do the redesigning in the after pics, its a great way to see potential, is it a software program ? Hi there ladybird . I won't be putting the polytunnel up; it's too big and would dominate the garden. It's in pieces in my garage. Anyone want a polytunnel ? As for the pictures: I used photoshop. I googled images of 'lawn', 'soil', 'welsh onions', 'chillis' and 'tomatoes', and copy/pasted them into my garden pictures. Then I used the stretch/skew/perspective features - along with masking - to blend the grass etc over my existing garden Who's a clever roofgardener, then
