I didn't take a picture but today I picked the very first tomato from my self-sown 'Gardeners Delight' on the balcony! It had a heavenly taste! The other plants will take a few more weeks before ripening.
I can't be 100% sure but I think it is 'Gardeners Delight' from the size of the fruits but on the other hand it seemed a little sweeter than normal for this tomato. Perhaps when I get fruits from the other plants I will be better able to judge whether of not this plant is what it appears to be. The foliage seems a little darker than the rest of the 9 plants I have but in a photo the difference doesn't stand out. At the same time there is one other plant that is different from the rest. This one has much lighter foliage than any other of the plants. It's also slower growing & is only a little more than half the height of the others! It's right next door to the self-sown one as well"

I was checking my tomatoes this evening & was quite surprised to see that the self-sown plant now has 2 trusses with ripening toms! None of the other plants are anywhere near it at present!
There are other plants with trusses that have set but it will be a few more weeks before any of them are ripe enough to pick.

Ours were attacked by the so called Tomato moth caterpillar. The Bright–line Brown-eye moth.

My tomatoes have finished now, no more trusses appearing on them. I've put the two with a few green fruit into the greenhouse with my cacti, hoping they'll redden soon, the other two are in the garden waste bin. The outdoor ones are splitting and being eaten by slugs, and since there's no more coming on them they'll be the next things to go into the bin.

The toms on the balcony are doing alright this year again. Last year they had wilt & I hardly got ant fruit. It had never happened before in nearly 20 years of growing them on the balcony. This year after the very late start, due to the very cold spring, they have taken off & 8 of the 9 plants have several trusses of fruit. The only plant that has no fruit is one I accidentality broke when planting up the growbags. I put the rootball with an inch or two of stem into the growbag & used a small part of the main stem as a cutting. Well the rootball part didn't grow as I'd hoped but the cutting took & is growing, albeit very slowly. I had hopes that I might get at least 1 truss from it but that's looking increasingly unlikely. Nevertheless I count it as a small success being the first time I've ever tried taking a tomato cutting! (Besides it has spent all its time outside in the growbag).
I was looking more closely at them this afternoon & the 2 trusses that are ripening on the self-sown plant are in need of picking! I'll pick them tomorrow & have them for lunch - if they make it as far as the kitchen!

soon be time for a taste test balc2 I did try it & found it rather sweeter than I anticipated! Tomorrow I'll pick the fruit from the 2 trusses on the self-sown & have them for lunch - if they reach the kitchen first! There are no toms ripe yet from any other plant though there are lots of them.

I've never had problems with caterpillars on my tomatoes. The only caterpillars I've had on the balcony have been the Cabbage White, on Nasturtiums, which I haven't got this year, & one species of caterpillar that eats the leaves of the geraniums & pelargoniums. I notice this one, not just for the holes in the leaves, but from the way it joins leaves together. When I see leaves like that I pick them off and throw them out of the balcony, into the grass. This year is an especially bad year for them.
I picked another tomato yesterday and like the first found it to be sweeter than normal for Gardeners Delight. Being as it's from the same plant & truss that's hardly surprising! Again I can't compare it with the other plants because there are no others with ripe toms yet. Even the 2nd truss on this plant is now ripe enough to pick!

I picked a huge crop of tomatoes, the best being Gardener’s Delight and a yellow one. I roasted them halved in olive oil with fresh thyme, rosemary, garlic and chilli, and then packed them into plastic bags and froze them.
I bought some large tomatoes cheap from the market and made Tomato, Chilli Jam, which I really like. I had a very tomatoey day.
