I have a Bird of Paradise that I've been growing from seed in the kitchen. It must be about 5 years since I sowed the seeds my son brought me back from Spain. There were only 4 seeds in the packet but only 1 germinated.
As I was told it would take years to flower I treated it like a foliage plant that one doesn't expect to flower, like a Rubber Tree plant so you can imagine my delight & surprise when about a month ago a new "leaf" began to emerge. It wes just a long thin stem that seemed to be taking a long time for the leaf to unfurl at first. After a couple of weeks I hardly began to hold out the hope that it might be a flower stem!
I expect the bud that's forming to open in the New Year. I can't show you a picture at the moment because I'm writing this on my phone & don't have any photos of it on here but I'll upload a photo of it from my computer later in the day.

Here are some pictures I took today. I was surprised to see that the bud has some colour in it! It's not easy to see from below & the Macro shot shows the colour up very nicely! (though I think it maybe a bit exaggerated by the macro lens on the phone & from being so close up, I don't see so much colour in it from my lowly vantage point! )
