we have just had a leaflet re the items no longer collected by the council for recycling, they will only take garden clippings and grass cuttings, We are not allowed to put potato peelings, fruit or other veg in the bin no food items raw or cooked. they are offering compost bins at reduced prices, for this waste or you have to put it in the land fill bins. Apparently its a Government ruling ( find this hard to believe) on food wastage. So all wasted food or uneaten parts of food are to be rotted down in land fill. complete lunacy.!! Is this only my council or have you all had the leaflet too?

Peony that sounds fine to me because you compost the rest yourself. If you have no compost bin, do get at least one at the reduced price offer and you will have great compost. I don't put meat or fish in the compost bin, but all the other food waste goes into it. I really love my compost.

I have to say I agree with Cherry on this one, anyway at least the Gov/Councils are doing something. It may not suit all but deep down we all know we must do something about it.

Cherry it was Poly's post, not mine We have three bins, two for recycling, one for any garden waste, food waste and cardboard which the Council compost at high temperature, another bin for glass, plastic, and tinfoil. Our landfill bin has hardly anything in it ;D

Our council are still collecting all compostable material, I hope they continue, it seems such a waste to send it to land fill especially as we are running out of landfill. I do compost all mine myself so if they stopped it wouldn't make any difference to me.
Our council are now charging to dump certain things at the local tip like tires, rubble and asbestos. I can see an increase in fly tipping in the future.

We compost everything possible. It annoys me that our black sack is mostly plastic packaging. At Sainsbury's I was buying a cake - it was sealed in plastic, but the guy tried to put it in a box as well! (I asked him not to...) Our Council tip has changed its hours since April - some days it isn't open at all, now. OH said that there were heaps of rubbish outside the gate.

I have a wormery for all my veg waste and a compost bin + 4 at the allotment, but there are times when I put things like bananas (can't eat really ripe bananas) in the brown bin, or onion skins as I find they don't rot down in my compost, it just seems so short sighted, I was in Wilko's today buying a water butt and I remarked to the girl on the till that the council were offering this same butt at a reduced cost + p&P but this was costing me less than their offer. She said after she read that her potato peelings couldn't go in the brown bin anymore she just threw the leaflets away. We should be encouraging people to recycle, not everyone wants a compost bin, or knows how to compost well, so it will just go into landfill then the councils will be fined for exceeding their quota.

I compost onion skins and potato peelings and my compost looks like it came out of a commercial bag. It is really beautiful. Lemon skins are a bit on the acid side, but they compost too.

They didn't even empty mine last time i put it out so wont make much difference here as they don't do there job right anyway. Ive seen people leave there bins on the road side for two weeks as they wasn't emptyed! I put most things in the compost bin or the black bin anyway (Nappies don't compost well) our black bin is full to the brim already and its not bin day until Wednesday. If they change it i can see my green bin used as a black bin.

I now don't put my bin out every week, as most of the compost is disposed of here on the farm. The recycling bin is put out about every two months and bottles are taken to the bottle banks.

No it hasn't Cherry its a mare having the bin emptied every 2 weeks we sometimes end up storing our black bin waste in carrier bags (tied) then they have to sit in the green bin until the black bin is emptied, we also have the waste/ash from the fire that goes into a silver bin we have to some how get that into the black bin too. They wont take any rubbish outside of the black bin here so a black bag would just be left, they also wont empty the bins if the lid is open by a certain amount. I'm not looking forward to a hot summer just because of the bins.
