Not my thing, it leaves me cold joining lots of other people - i'd rather do it quietly and by myself. I always think that it's too much of an intrusion when groups of fools with various lenses invade the birds' territories.
It happened last winter with Waxwings that were in the area - groups got to hear about this particular area and invaded and consequently the birds moved on and didn't return.
Far better to do it singly, individually. Better for them and us.

I read today on a wildlife forum, that the gales we've all been experiencing is having an effect on the small birds Apparently, they're either being blown off course or it's too much of a struggle to get back to the nesting box each time with food and consequently the chicks are being left to die - it would seem that a lot of people are noticing this with their boxes When you think of the weight of them it's quite plausible i would have thought. (had originally typed "the weight of a tit" but reworded it )

Our 'girls' are fully grown Suffolks and look big. When I pick them up they weigh nothing. Question how come the ones in the supermarkets weigh so heavy? I can understand why garden birds have problems in the gales but it's amazing how they fly at all when we can't stand up ! We're told that the numbers of garden birds are far less than when we were kids. This must be rectified if we want our children to enjoy it.

I think the ones in Supermarkets are pumped full of water (after death). I spent the day catching fledglings who had found their way into the greenhouse and couldn't get back out. I think I need to 'go seventies' on all my greenhouses. I have cane, beaded curtains on the other green house, it lets air in but keeps fledglings out. I bet no one realised seventies kitch would have a use today ;D
