A good thought Cherry but well away. There used to be a Mophead in the little raised bed but not enough soil so last back-end I dug loads of clay out and filled with soil. I've planted a Mme Alfred Carrier there and a Brunnera , both are ok.

That is not right Merlin. Are the dead branches all attached to the same big one which comes from the root? If so, prune this off low down.

That's a thought Cherry, but I've just checked and it's all over.

I think you will have to check the roots, but I am sure you won't want to but I don't know what is wrong with your Philadelphus.

Should I trim it right down, wash all soil off and pot it up in compost? looks like I've nothing to lose.

Try trimming it back to any healthy looking growth, give it a good water with a general feed and wait.. I wouldn't wash the soil off the roots....it wouldn't like that much of a disturbance I would have thought

Cuttings will root very easily right now Merlin. It is not a shrub anyone would want to be without.

Has it flowered, Merlin? I prune mine as soon as the flowers are over, so July would be a good time to give it a hard prune, followed by a feed.
I checked the RHS advice pages, but there's no mention of any problems with Philadelphus shrubs.

It's right by the front door Geranium and a bit early but if I can find something to replace it with I'll pot it up and then do as you suggest.

I do hope you can rescue it. I wish I could have helped! Poor Philadelphus.

I'll incorporate as much fresh compost as I dare when I pot it.

Some TLC often works.

Do you really need to "disturb its roots"Merlin?....might be better to cut it back and feed it....as we have suggested.....plus take some cuttings?......
