I got to spend about half an hour On the balcony yesterday morning. I went out with the intention of repotting the Carnation seedlings that have been growing in small pots but I can't get rid of the tiny green caterpillars that have infested them since last year. I think they are the grubs of the Carnation Sawfly. But even if that's right they also infest practically any kind of plant. I discovered them on my Geraniums,on my Cyclamen and a few other plants.😔
I ended up throwing lots of the Carnation seedlings away.😢 They were also covered in greenflies. I need about 25 more pots to pot up the survivors, which I don't have, even though I have 100s of pots!🙄

Due to early morning rain & a cold wind & the lack of suitable pots I didn't do anything on the balcony yesterday 😕

I've just done a search for Carnation sawfly but it doesn't seem to be what I have on the balcony. I think it's the Tortrix moth that's responsible for the damage I'm seeing to my plants. 😢 It causes much more damage to many more plants. The caterpillars are green and join the leaves together with silk but I don't think they feed inside, I think they hide themselves in the rolled up leaves for protection, from birds probably.

Made a start on the Crevice garden using the old crazy paving slabs. Hard going as my hands are not good at the moment.

Pricked out some Malope 'Vulcan' seedlings into individual cells in a tray & sowed some more Calendula 'Art Shades' seeds in a cell tray in the greenhouse. Also sowed some chrysanthemum 'Rainbow' in the kitchen propagator.Fed the birds several times today, the female blackbird is still sitting on eggs in the nest in the log store but she spends an awful lot of time feeding & wandering off so not sure if her eggs have got too cold.

finished the raised bed I made, emptied all the compost from the containers in, will need to top up now with topsoil and more compost and paint everything including the wall also redid the dustbin shelter as it had collapsed in places where the wood had rotted. I think I'm going to lose mums Acer, it started to come into leaf but they have started to shrivel, I had thought it needed watering, but now realise that it is waterlogged, I've lifted it off the ground to let it drain but I'm not holding up much hope, really upset as it was quite an old one

I didn't do anything on the balcony either yesterday and it's not likely that I will be doing anything today either! 😔

The Crevice Garden The beginning (last Wednesday morning). Stump ground out and the area raked over. First steps. Waiting for the cobble surround.

This is how it looks now. We tweaked it a bit to make it look less like leaping dolphins. Still needs the cobbles round it and of course plants.

That's a shame about the Acer grindle, hope it survives, I've lost a couple in the last few years which have suffered in the cold & wet. I received a pack of 6 bargain tomato plugs (3 Sweet Aperitif & 3 Sungold) from Suttons & a 72 summer garden plug collection from T&M in the post so I planted them up in pots & trays in the greenhouse while the hailstones battered it! 😁

I feel almost embarrassed to say that I didn't do anything in the balcony either yesterday! 😊🙁 I will try to make amends today - if the sun & clear skies last long enough! 😂

geumgrower, I'm afraid some of your pics are not loading! When I looked at them this morning & lots were missing I thought perhaps it was my phone but I still don't see them on my desktop computer!
