I have these in my new front garden. Is this some sort of lilac? It's quite a nice shape so will keep it. And this is not a nice shape. And the stems look all... mildewy. What is it? (Our cleaning ladies put solar lights in it for a surprise when we moved in, hence the bugs in it!)

The top one could be a Lilac Bess but I can't be sure, the above looks very much like a Rhododendron.

Thanks. Seems like we agree on the Lilac Well I don't know much about Rhodos but I always thought they were plants for woodlandy/dappled shade/sheltered from high wind etc, and this one is in the very opposite position to that. Guess that's why it doesn't look too happy.

the Rhodo looks very unhappy there Bess they also like acidic soil maybe you could move it to a better place?

I think it might have to go, tbh, garden is not Rhodo-friendly! Will have a think. Of course, I should've remembered they like acid soil - there's often pictures of them on ericaceous compost bags!

is there any possibility you could put it in a container with ericaceous soil?

Is a possibility, as I have a big barrel planter that miraculously survived the journey. Slightly ropey but might work. Don't worry, I won't whack the Rhodo on the tip just yet, I am having to be very economical just now as not much cash left to spend on the garden lol!

Or feed it regularly with a liquid, ericaceous fertiliser.

There is a liquid which you water the whole plant with which helps to stop it yellowing but although I have used it countless times the name escapes me. Will have a look in the shed later and see if I still have it. comes in a powder form which you then dilute.

Sequestrene, Jim? Miracle Gro for Azaleas and Rhodo`s can be used the same way.

My Mum-in-law wants to know what this is? It's growing in the garden of one of the local 'old folks' she looks after. I looked it up online but it's not what I thought it was... help? It looks very familiar again. Like Persicaria but not.
