Thank you, Dai, and now I feel silly. I've got a packet of RV seed.

I do apologise for this photo, it's terrible, but I have a touchscreen camera and I keep accidentally sending the focus all crazy If no one can see it properly, I'll take another photo tomorrow. I have this popping up all over the place by our back fence since we cleared several feet of ivy - I think it's coming from the neighbour. I don't think I want it?!

grindle is probably right Bess , I had a dogwood tree at the old house which sent up suckers all over the garden which I was forever pulling out.If something appears suddenly & shoots straight upwards you can bet it's something you don't want! You could have a look over into next door & see if they have a pretty tree which sends suckers up, lilac, cherry etc. & see if you want to keep one of the suckers to grow on but otherwise you're probably better pulling them out.

I can't see through to next door (that's behind us) because of the thick and tall mixed ivy/hawthorn hedge they've got. I did wonder if it was hawthorn but the leaves are different. Here's a better photo just in case it helps some plant whiz ID it for me

It could be Ground Elder.

I just looked up lilac, thanks Daisy, but I think the leaves are too serrated? I don't think it's Awful Elder, tbh, I checked that first! Too shrubby.

Birch is definitely similar looking. Wondering if Forsythia might be a possibility too.
