All of our outdoor tomatoes have succumbed to Blight I feel for you Esther, I've given up growing them outside. They always got to the almost red stage and then went brown

I shouldn't really grumble as we have had one of the best crops ever in the greenhouse and have picking from the outside ones for a few weeks

Whole trusses of tomatoes are breaking at the stem of some of my plants and the truss is left hanging limp. Obviously, it is caused by the weight, but is there nothing I can do in advance of this situation happening? Is it only me who suffers with this problem. It is the first year the tomatoes have been wound round the string which I really like.

I had that happen last year, I tied them to the main support to take some of the weight off them, it worked for me.
This is my first year for growing up string too, I shan't be going back, it is so easy.

I had trusses doing this, too, Cherry We use canes and wires to support our tomato plants and I managed to tie the trusses to the wires for more support

It is a bit of a bind tying in the tomato trusses, but if needs must.
Thankyou for the replies.

I took the tomato plants down today as ripening is now a slow process and I need the space in the greenhouse. I thought my husband would have to do this as my back is not too good. He carried on like a two bob watch, so while he was away this morning at his tutorial (I am glad I'm not intelligent), I made a start. I started and I have just about finished, all in under an hour because the plants were wound around string. This is more praise for the string system. They have been left insitu (tied in a bow) for next year. It is helping to strengthen my back without straining it.

I have my string tied up ready for next year. I can't believe I struggled for so long and how much easier the string method is.
I'm pleased your back was OK.

I would tend to use new strings next year.....in case the old ones are harbouring any "nasties"

I will take the risk Lou. I have never seen healthier tomatoes and the strings will have had lots of air around them.

Some folks take the whole plant down and lay it on a bed of straw. Ok if under cover but will attract slugs if in the open. I just use more string.

another stupid question from me How long does it take for a tomato to grow to full size, it's a little green thing, it seems to be getting slightly bigger and i'm trying to give it a bit of a nip and tuck, to stop new stems and leafs sprouting and let it focus on growing it's little tomato !

We have not had much on tomatoes this year. Have we learnt lessons from this thread? I know I have.
Rosie I forgot to ask you how to move a post when you were here and Twiams has asked a question about tomatoes, but there is so much on here that I thought it would be a good idea to keep this one going. It would be good for Twiams to read back through it too.
