Thanks for those messages. Couldn,t go on the allotment this morning because Rosemary wanted the car so I did some weeding in my own garden.Did the chrysanth and rose beds and treated the paths with weedol. This afternoon I went on the allotment and planted 30 odd cabbage, caulis ,calabrese and purple sprouting broccoli from 5 inch pots. This bed is full now.I cover the bed with netting supported on a frame of canes to keep the cabbage white butterflies off.I fixed up the canes but didn,t have time to put the netting on.It needs doing properly and fastening down all round so it will have to wait till tomorrow.Because I couldn't put the netting on today I will have to check all the plants for butterflies eggs before it goes on.

Only had this evening for gardening today.Went on the allotment and put the nets over the brassica bed.Spent the rest of the time disbudding and sideshooting the dahlias ,dead heading the roses and pulling up more weeds.I had a girl from the school garden club and two of her friends helping me doing this and her mother and dad helped me with the netting.I had never met them before .I will give them some veg in return.

Spent most of the day getting exhibits ready for Edenfield show which is tomorrow.Edenfield is at the other side of Bury from where I live.I am very short of flowers though and I will be cutting for Southport on Tuesday because I have to stage there on Wednesday. In other years I have plenty flowers for both shows.Southport show is the highlight of the year for me and it is more important that I do my best there. I have therefore not cut any flowers for Edenfield that I may need for Southport.Even so I will not be able to stage all the classes at Southport that I have entered. There are several annuals that I grow for showing that have not grown well or will be late. The pansies have been rubbish and have nearly all died. I have hardly any roses or dahlias .Tony Bracegirdle shows here so I wouldn't have any chance in roses anyway. With dahlias I can't find 3 matching blooms of any variety. Many have no buds on yet particularly the giants. Those that Tel sent me are just budding.I have some decent pot plants so I am hoping to do O.K.with these. The car is all pcked up ready for an early start tomorrow.I will tell you tomorrow how I went on.

Edenfield show was rather thin on the ground. There were only four main exhibitors .Three or four exhibitors who normally show there didn,t turn up including Tony Bracegirdle. He was at Shrewsbury.I put 58 entries in but 20 of them were pot plants.I won 18 firsts, 17 seconds and 13 thirds altogether. There were only 3 pot plants in apart from mine and they didn't win anything.I won the cup for the most points in the carnation classes with one carnation. There was only that one in!.I didn't win anything with dahlias though.I only had a mixed vase of three and a single bloom.I will show you a few pictures now

Well done Derek, in what is turning out to be a poor year for Horticultural shows.

Tony didn't seem to have as many roses as usual at Shrewsbury. The national veg society held their show at Shrewsbury too and there was hardly anything there apart from potatoes. So yes, across the board, early shows are struggling, so any exhibitor actually getting stuff onto the bench deserves a prize in itself I reckon.

Thanks for those comments. This afternoon I have tidied up the roses in the church garden and took all the prunings to the recycling centre along with some from the allotment. There were a lot and they filled the back of the car. This evening I have dug up most of the potatoes on the allotment but didn't get time to finish them.I had two girls helping me,two of the ones I told you about on Thursday. They now know where potatoes come from and not from a bag in Tesco.

Only had this evening for gardening today but I went on the allotment and finished digging up the potatoes.I always dig over the ground again in case I have missed any (and I always do )and remove the weeds at the same time. I carried on doing this but didn,t have time to do it all. It will have to wait though because tomorrow I will be cutting and sorting out my flowers for Southport show.
