I have taken all the dahlias back into the greenhouse for over night. Heavy rain forecast tonight, i do not want the pots to get saturated.

It has turned very windy here. I'm glad I've only planted out low-growing plants.

I went out last night in my waxed jacket and put them all into the dry of the greenhouse, they were no where near as wet as I was. They are wet but not truly soggy, do you think they will be OK or should I put the heated bench on to dry them out a bit?

Yours will be ok WF, my plants are younger than yours, with not needing the majority of blooms until mid Sept.

The problem planting dahlias then we get that cutting rain like the Strongbow arrows (the advert) is that dahlias can loosen and elongate the hole around the stem. You could try inserting 12" lengths of cane over them, say 3 per dahlia, and crossing over the top like a wigwam shape. Hope that makes sense! This can greatly help them to stop rocking. Regards, Paul

That sounds like a good tip Paul.

That sounds like a good tip Paul. Cherry youre welcome, hope it made sense. Its an easy thing yet difficult to explain. Basically insert the canes at angles in the ground very near the dahlia and so the tops of the canes cross over. Like a wigwam without the covering. Paul x

Regards taking dahlias back inside if weather turns windy/rainy. I have for many years had cold frames in the garden, screwed down using screws/plugs (Rawplugs) to slabs laid down. I made up hinged lids for each so that if weather dictates I can close the lids. Inside each lid is a 'wooden stay' bolted to the inside of each cover. I prop up the lids with the stay and I tie a bungy cord to each stay so if the weather turns when say I am out at work then the lid wont go swinging back on itself. Regards, Paul

As some of you are aware... I am growing miniature cactus dahlias this year.....I've noticed that a lot of my plants are throwing buds on the leading shoot already.....has anyone noticed this with their plants in general this year?

depends when the cutting was taken and rooted. March cuttings of certain varieties will be showing buds by now, a lot of mine are. Later cuttings no sign of buds. Also depends if you ordered the plants in or grew them yourself. I have found that buds form a lot earlier from new stock from the nurseries. Probably due to them forcing the plants a bit.

Thanks for your comments Scrumpy. It is happening mainly on cuttings I have taken myself....wondered if it was a varietal thing, I didn 't experience this last year...or the year before
