As some of you are aware... I am growing miniature cactus dahlias this year.....I've noticed that a lot of my plants are throwing buds on the leading shoot already.....has anyone noticed this with their plants in general this year? Hello Lou Could be for several reasons, most likely being the cultivar grown, some do bud early. Experience helps, for example Trelyn Kiwi I prefer 3rd/4th week March cuttings, whereas Kelsae Carla has to be 1st/2nd week April cuttings. With mini cactus I would grow on 2 stops anyway to give say 18 stems, first about planting time, then second at 3 pairs leaves on each resultant stem. If you are exhibiting and find dahlias budding too early them you can employ a knockback system. Basically means on a given plant instead of allowing blooms on the middle buds, to grow some on to bloom on a wing bud or lower shoot. I always did this on Kelsae it just rockets away. Also seasonal variations play a part. Also I have heard where the cutting is taken from on the tuber effects things! Paul x

Thanks for your comments Scrumpy. It is happening mainly on cuttings I have taken myself....wondered if it was a varietal thing, I didn 't experience this last year...or the year before obviously all varieties are different, which can be an advantage. When you want early blooms, early flowering varieties make things a lot easier. Also, you can take cuttings later. Looking at my plants, i would say they are a good 10 days ahead of normal so i may delay stopping them a week or so. Usually i stop early to encourage the side shoots.....this year the side shoots are already showing, so stopping means those shoots will develop quicker which i don't want at this stage.

following on from paul's comments about taking cuttings for different plants at different times, with Kilmorie i can take cuttings up until the 1st of May and they will flower by the middle of August. They are better taken later because you end up running out of side shoots on early cuttings to knockback the buds to find one to flower when you want it to

Any tips on Collerettes would be most welcome as I am planning on trying my hand at this particular variety myself. I have a few coming from the National Dahlia Collection very soon. Danum Torch, my avatar pic, is one of them

When i pack up showing dahlias, i am going to concentrate more on growing from seed. You just do not know what you will get, material for the compost heap, a top show variety, or a best selling garden variety.

I have grown also April Heather, Teesbrooke Redeye, Fashion Monger, Patricia. Of these Patricia is a gorgeous red, Fashion Monger is another easy grower. Regards, Paul
