I have never grown collarettes for shows, so not sure how many blooms to a plant to grow, i would guess at 10 to 12, but it would be a guess. So i have emailed a competitor of mine, who i know grows and shows a few collarettes, when i receive a reply i will post what he says.

Scrumpy and Sirplant.... and anyone Try this link loads about collerettes from Ivor Kitchenerwww.dahliaworld.co.uk/colleret.htm I would suggest you contact Ivor Kitchener he is a collerette fanatic and exhibits at our main show in Cornwall. Ivor is from Devon. He is also a judge. If you cant find let me know ans I'll dig it out. I myself would recommend Don Hill, easy grower, excellent for cuttings. I have grown also April Heather, Teesbrooke Redeye, Fashion Monger, Patricia. Of these Patricia is a gorgeous red, Fashion Monger is another easy grower. Regards, Paul Thanks for the info Paul..... ;D

On the NDS website in the members section under study there is a detailed study into the Hybridization of Collerettes by Dr Mike Bryant and Ivor Kitchener. It's a large document that has been split into 11 down-loadable smaller documents. It is very interesting reading. www.dahlia-nds.co.uk/Members/study.htm

I usually give all my dahlia tubers that i have taken cuttings from away at the end of the month. This year now i have more room, i am planting out this weekend, it will be a slight gamble on there not been any more frost though all the Decorative types small and miniature and the ball types and let the bees do their work a little earlier, for seed production.
I will not start to the plant out my show plants, until the 28th just in case we do have a late frost.

Mine are going into the garden now. What i do is take out the soil same size as the pot the plants are in , then put the plant in it's pot in the hole, and leave them there until the end of the month when they come out of the pots and are planted properly. That way, the roots in the pots start to emerge from the root ball prior to planting and have a taste of what they will be growing in. Plus of course, should an overnight frost be forecast they can be brought in to the front room, kitchen, downstairs loo, to protect them

I use 3ft canes for those, you can put you canes in after you have planted them, i place 3 to a plant, if you can give each plant 2 square feet would be best, if not plant them closer. you can stop them has you plant them. That last dahlia to root i should imagine will be smaller than the rest, i would use that for a stock dahlia for cuttings if you wanted too, plant it still in its pot somewhere.
