I left Ruby in the ground and wondered when I lifted them why I had miscounted. I was delighted to see it as it is a real favourite. It is perfectly alright. Can you believe it? I am glad your dahlia tuber is OK Cherry, i know someone who has that variety, i am sure if i asked him nicely, he would have sent you a replacement.

Thanks Tel. I love the soft red of this. It isn't really ruby coloured.

Tel,What is the difference between large pompoms and miniature balls? This is what the NDS classified directory says. Miniature ball dahlia, have fully double blooms showing no disc, ball shaped or slightly flattened. The ray florets are displayed in spiral arrangement and are involute and round at the tip. Have blooms not exceeding 115mm in diameter. Large pompon dahlias, have fully double spherical blooms of diminutive size, with florets largely involute along their length (longitudinal axis). Size of bloom is less than 83mm but greater than 52mm.

Tel, I want to thank you - I'd given up on the dahlias I left in the ground, but as you said give it a try, I did this afternoon, and I dug up three sets of fat healthy tubers from 'Famoso'. I had intended to order some more, but with any luck I won't have to now. ;D I planted all my dahlias in pots in the greenhouse. I managed to get most of them in the propagator, too.

Sounds promising, those you have placed in the propagator, if they are still firm in a week or so, they should be ok.

Sweetpea, the NDS made a new class for Large Poms last year for the National and Harrogate. The Large Pom, size, less than 83mm but greater than 52mm The growers are now trying to produce new varieties of this now.
The pom we all know maximum size is 52mm. Thanks for that info Tel. I'm assuming that the other criteria for poms remains the same. Will have to check my rings and possibly make a homemade one for the new classification.

Lou, you'd be able to answer this. I have an old heated propagator, no thermostat. I think it reached about 18 degrees. Would it be worth putting some pots of dahlias in it, even though the lid won't be able to go on?
