I like Knautias - but you'll find it needs dead-heading frequently to keep it flowering. Be careful where you cut - you'll see. Yes, Cherry, it's a beautiful plant. I just hope it stays that colour!

I've been thinking, and I'm going to order the rose I saw at Hampton Court, plus last year's 'Rose of the Year'. I can make space for them both by removing the poorly Cistus that hasn't recovered from the flooding plus the odd pink Geraniums around it. I love the two colours together.

What a surprise Geranium! It would fit in beautifully. My Cistus corbariensis seemed to be in the way of the lawn mower for some reason, so I took cuttings and got rid of it. The cuttings are taking very well. Do this while you think about it because Cistus can be a good plant when it is in its prime. This weather is suiting my cuttings and they are not even covered. They are on the second shelf in the greenhouse.

My Cistus corbariensis is rather large, Cherry. I suppose cuttings would be a good idea, though. I removed 'Siverpink' yesterday, and the two roses are coming tomorrow!

That new Knautia I bought is rather nice, now it's come out. Like a deep velvet burgundy pin cushion - with white pins! Hope your Roses got to you alright in this hot weather, Geranium

Yes, thanks, Bess, they did, but not until the afternoon. I'd hoped they'd arrive in the morning as I needed to go to the GC for some dried manure, a pack of Epsom Salts - and I also fancied planting Lavandula 'Hidcote' as a border to the new roses. I did go as there was just time, but they'd sold all their lavenders. I got some annual Angelonias for the time being. If I can find any, I'm still determined to plant 'Hidcote'. I carried the roses up next to my existing lavender border to check, and it would be lovely round them. I'm the sort of person who gets a picture in her head and is obstinate enough to follow it through. I'm sure I'll track some down elesewhere.

I get all my Lavendar plants from Aldi No honestly, they can actually have some nice plants in there, only they don't bother to water them so it's hit and miss if you get there on time. I wanted Javelin White, which was supposed to be in Aldi this week along with Hidcote Blue and some others, but by the time I got there they'd gone as well, sigh.

Bess we are not proud. I'm sure Aldi are good for plants. We don't have Aldi, but Morrisons sometimes have great quality plant offers. It is worth keeping an eye on the stores for bargains. My fantastic Clematis piilu came from Morrisons last year for approximately 90p as it was broken and is flowering now.

There is an Aldi in Bridgwater, but it's not easy to get to. I sometimes find a good plant in Morrison's or B&Q which is conveniently next door to Morrison's. I had a Clem. viticella 'Polish Spirit' from Morrison's last year, a very small one, but I grew it on and now it's doing well. You're right about supermarkets not watering their plants, Bess - I get very annoyed about it. I shall have to hunt round for Lavenders, by phone first.

I went to a group of Open Gardens yesterday and pounced on a beautiful Clematis viticella on the plant stall, which I was told is a seedling from 'Minuet'. I'm thrilled with it, and have just the place for it. It's twice the size of any plants you see in Garden Centres, and only cost me £4.

That is nice Geranium. I fell in love with the viticellas when I saw 'Royal Velours' at Sissinghurst 25 years ago. Reliable and no wilt.

Strangely, my 'Royal Velours' hasn't reappeared this year. I can't imagine why. This is the flower of the Clem. seedling I got yesterday. I much prefer it to its parent, which was 'Minuet'. I got my six small pots of Lavender today, plus a couple of other plants which are up at the greenhouse, so I'll tell you their names later. The M5 junction was a nightmare with roadworks and I was very weary when I got home.
